View Full Version : Programming for money?
If you're a programmer - and you code for a living... Do you make a lot? If so, is it worth all your time that you generally put in for the project? I know a few programmers that usually make $xxx per project and it doesn't usually take them that long to code the certain project that they were assigned to.

I'm a programmer for Destopets, and a ex-programmer (but still programs) for KinoIsle.
I currently am not paid for any of my programming, and it probably wil stay that way.
When I code, I may kinda leave it alone for a bit, but then later I would work on it till it's done, it usually never takes all my time.

I've done some small jobs here and there in my free time, I make anywhere from $20 - $50 an hour depending on what the client wants, so yes it pays well. If I had a degree, and went into an actual computer science job I think the starting salary is around 90,000$ and after a couple of years it goes to 115,000$ or so, depending on what field you specialize in.

I guess it didn't work out too good for this guy.

Maybe he was a bad programmer and no one hired him again. You never know. Either that, or he's out of work because he only knows *just* HTML and no other programming language.

lol! HTML isn't a programming language. It isn't dynamic without javascript.
Anyways, I tend to code cheaply. Around $20~$50 an hour, depending on how much effort the job will take me. If I really spent my time doing it as a 40 hour a week job, I would be rich xD. I could probably make a entire year's salary within a month or two doing it.

I'm pretty sure programmers don't start that high on pay.
According to http://swz.salary.com/salarywizard/layouthtmls/swzl_compresult_national_IT10000010.html average starting salary is somewhere near 50,000.
Anyone, when I freelance (hardly ever) I quote by the project and end up getting paid from $50-$100/hour.
General web development is much better. I may have a job coming up soon that requires about 4 hours of work and about $400 in outsourcing work (for a local business) and it pays somewhere from 2-3,000.

I have done a bunch of websites for people and made some money and done some custom wowbb themes for a few other boards. I am not a professional programmer though.

Gamer.Saga I wasn't talking about HTML. I was talking about C/C++, Java, etc. I'm not that dumb......
HTML is a markup language
CSS is a scripting language
js scripting
PHP scripting
MySQL/SQL/Oracle, etc. Scripting in a database kinda way
AJAX is just an extensive version of js which makes it scripting, etc.
NOTE: HTML is not dynamic with Javascript. HTML is only used to make the layouts of the page, JS can be dynamic in a way, PHP is the most dynamic one.

You're correct, it all depends on what field inside of computer sciences you go into though, programming is invloved in many of them, so the salary is really ranged. I can't remember what profession started at the numbers I listed, I think I saw it on the comcast fan one day.

Yes it is true,
my good friend in the computer industry was telling me Database Administrators make a good $100-150/hour. I'm like, Man.... I gotta do that instead! hahaha :p

I usually quote by the project and make anywhere from $120 - $500 per project. I find going by the hour discourages the client.

sorry bro, wasn't talkin to you about html not being a programming language, I was referring to virtubots' post. I also beg to differ about html being dynamic with javascript. Can you not generate the page in different ways with javascript? Can you not change the page after it has loaded? Anyways, I was just clarifying. Onto what I was going to say..............
I generally quote a price like pat and end up with what I get as my hourly rate. It generally ends up as $20~$50 an hour. It normally turns out high if I over estimated, but no one cares as long as the product is delivered without flaw and I get paid. I generally get a lot of my work done within 10~30 mins when I'm really into it.

i love to program for money
http://boredomkills.org/comp
i funded the building of my computer on coding money alone. Ive never made a triple digit amount for a single job. Ive been coding for over a year :( im trying to get out of freelance and get into webmastering.
To be honest i dont see a career in programming and several people that i know who also program say that they wouldnt make a career out of it. Id prefer to build, and maintain servers and networks for a living.

The thing with programming, at least for me, is I won't take a job unless its at least $250ish. I will take smaller jobs around $50-$100 only when I know it will take 10-20 minutes of real work. So, the less work you want me to do, the more you end up paying. Its like I charge a 2 hour minimum of work.
