View Full Version : I've glanced at those wanting to learn PHP.

And I'm just curious, not in terms for myself, but for other people. I've glanced around at a few threads (yes, not very many) of those wanting to learn a programming language and a few of our members throw out a few tutorial sites. Why not the best programmers we have here look at all the tutorial sites that most of us have bookmarked or located somewhere in the forum, and do one of two possible ideas.

One: We could create a sticky, listing all of the tutorial sites of each of the languages from easiest to hardest. Also I would probably include a relevance to whether it can be useful for pet sites, or just web designing in general.

Two: Possibly all of the programmers agree on the best tutorial site for the language in question, and possibly host sessions here on the boards. Some people might like talking to people rather than reading through all sorts of tutorials, mainly since everyone interprets differently than others.

That's all I can come up with at the moment, but in my opinion, 'help' doesn't mean to just refer someone to a page. While I am more technical oriented myself, I do get the feeling of some of the new people at programming don't seem to catch a hold of it.

I don't have much potential for learning a language at the moment, so I tend to draw more attention to my computers here and making sure they are repaired.

Feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

Well the only way to learn is to do the stuff yourself, you can't have someone do it for you and you look at it and say "Oh yea, I can do that!"...

It takes a lot of practice, and making script over and over, with less tutorials over time to really hit it.

I've been compiling a list of tutorial sites to do this. I'll have a sticky up in a few days. The thread wont consist of just php tutorial sites though. Share some here for any language? I could really use the help in compiling the list.

Eh, it takes time. Not everyone can understand tutorials, after all they are written from a few people's perspective. Of course it depends on what language you're wanting to learn that somewhat affects what I'm wanting to reply with.

Why don't we start a tutorials section, I'd be happy to do a few tuts here and there.

From a non-biased perspective (and not to be offensive), I would guess that most people who know programming would probably say 'no' because of "Oh I learned it by reading this or that, and played around with scripts for a few years and I am what I am today, so you could figure it out yourself."

If I knew programming, I would do a tutorial section myself, but I'm just a simple computer technician for all practical purposes.

Vivacity is an excerllent programmer tho and has helped me numerous times out on AIM :) The tutorials online(if you look in the wrong places) i sometimes find are just really rushed and lacking in detail and contain huge holes in explaining things. Perhaps, being a virtual petsite community, we can write some tutorials here and there that are much better explained and even better- anyone who's confused, can post in the tutorial and then the person who wrote the tutorial can clear things up and edit the topic.

Newbie programmers can benefit from OOP programmers, and people who have never programmed before would benefit from newbie programmers. EXP has told me that learning from an OOP programmer- stuff is very difficult to understand and grasp. Newbie programmers are much easier to understand because there code is *usually* alot simpler :)
