Promoting a virtual pet site / succeeding?

I've yet to see this thread posted, so I'm going try to offer a few tips on how to promote your virtual pet site... It's quite simple and I hope everyone has a few pointers to add.

1: Have a referral system with great prizes.
2: Have certain features opened to guests - so they can view the site and see what it's like before registering.
3: Make sure your pet site has the <meta> tags. The description could possible read "XXXX pets is a virtual pet site, join for free and create your own virtual pets!"
4: Don't try to be like neopets, try to be unique - create features that haven't been implemented yet.

I'd say another one would be to try and have a diverse list of pets to offer. People get tired of seeing the same old tired pets done over and over.

yes unique colors are good so it wont just be basic colours...users will get bored of that

Yeah, it's always bothered me that most petsites make it so you have to either join or never know what you're missing.

I agree and if the features are opened, then make sure they tell the users about the feature a lot.

It's hard to create new features that differ from Neopets because Neopets has pretty much made all the features that can be made.

Well, the most popular features are taken by them.. pets.. items.. blah. You never know what ideas they might be stealing, in fact.

I have heard neopets has taken ideas from others.:/ But there are lots of sites out there with unique idea.s:)

There were older sites the Neopets. So Pets, Items, Forums, etc was not from neopets.
