Referral systems are a huge part of all virtual pet games. It doesn't matter if you think they do or not - but they are the reason most pet sites grow from a small community into a big community. Neopets had a great one when it first opened and a ton of users used it.
You need to have great prizes, good banners, and various methods to help the users to refer. Why should they? Have them tell their friends, run a few contests - and offer bonuses to the users that refer the most in one month.
If you lack the production of a great referral system then it might be pretty hard for your virtual pet site to grow.
How can I get them to use it though?
Well, why not have your artists create special items, or avatars only obtainable from the referral system? Have prizes up to 2,000 referrals - after that, the users will be rewarded with 2,000 of the site's currency or so. Make sure the prizes are good or they won't refer.::clap
