Yes! There has always been java that could rival flash, but everyone could always understand flash better than java. So flash caught on. Now there is a new competitor in the ring. Microsoft has stepped in with "silverlight".

I've not really read much into it yet, but the little that I have read intrigues me enough to make me want to try it out. I'll share what I find out when I find it out. Has anyone tried it out yet?

The Mono guys are also working on a Linux implementation called Moonlight (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moonlight_%28runtime%29).

Honestly, I'm quite disappointed with silverlight. I expected something that could actually rival flash player, but it doesn't begin to compare. The fact they call for major use of javascript is the biggest thing that turned me off, I was honestly hoping for an entirely new language. I also swear that if I have another lag attack from a silverlight application, I'll go mentally nuts. The concept of the entire silverlight thing doesn't feel very solid to me. The only thing I see getting it off the ground is microsoft forcing it into people's lives by pre-bundling it in future windows releases. The only truly decent thing I've seen done with it is the video players they have on their own site, and it ain't that great in firefox. Firefox has this feature where after a certain amount of time a embedded script runs, it asks you if you want to stop the script, and well, I figure it continuously asked me to stop the script because of the video buffering or something. Either way, I do find it as something nice to play with, I'm not going to completely knock it until I have implemented it into some testing.

Edit //
Screw it, I've officially knocked it. I can do more with flash. Flash = easier. =/

Pssst, just call it Adobe... Macromedia was purchased by Adobe a few years back. :)
