Well, I got bored earlier today and I got rid of the advertisements on neopets as you can see in this screenshot (http://img230.imageshack.us/img230/1461/19979107eq7.jpg). You might ask "ZOMFGZORZ! HOW DID YOU DO THAT?!?!" Well, it was simple... my browser is just superior to yours. I use firefox 2.0. As most people know, firefox has a plugins feature. Anyone can script their own XUL powered plugin. Similar methods of how I blocked all the adverts on neopets can be implemented on other sites such as myspace. The two plugins I used to do this were greasemonkey (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/748) and adblock plus (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865). What these plugins do are two completely separate things that can, when combined, make a perfect ad-free site. Both visually and bandwidth-wise. I'm assuming on the "bandwidth-wise" part. Since I blocked the neopet adverts, the site loads a lot faster.

The following example tutorial is for neopets advertisements!
GreaseMonkey is a tool that allows you to add your own javascript to any website you want. Though I find it completely unreliable when you want to define your own functions, it does allow you to easily just slap in functionless implementations. What I did in Grease Monkey was this:

Enable Includes:
http://www.neopets.com/*
http://neopets.com/*
http://ncmall.neopets.com/

Script: (don't remove the stuff in // ==/UserScript==)
document.getElementById('ban').style.display = 'none !important';
document.getElementById('ban_bottom').style.displa y = 'none !important';
document.getElementById('ban').style.visibility = 'hidden';
document.getElementById('ban_bottom').style.visibi lity = 'hidden';

Now when you go to neopets, you should no longer see the 90 pixel tall block above the entire site. You might be like "What do I do about the adverts?! They still show up!" Thats where adblock plus comes in. I found adblock plus from searching through firefox's plugins. I got lucky and found a full list of what needs to be blocked advert-wise on the daily neopets. The daily neopets has a tutorial for blocking ads specifically on neopets. I didn't feel like downloading the extra plugin when I finally saw it.

In adblock plus block all of the following:
*fastclick*
*doubleclick*
*banner*
*.ads*
*ads.*
adlog.com
burstnet.com
valueclick.com
doubleclick.net
tribalfusion.com
ad.doubleclick.net
ads.partnersource.com
servedbyadvertising.com
images.neopets.com/buttons
images.neopets.com/sponsors
images.neopets.com/728ads
*casalemedia.com*
http://images.neopets.com/ads/sponsor/sponsored_links_*
*neopets.com/ads*

The big irony of this is that neopets tells you how to block some of their advertisements that make them money.... Neopet's Block Tutorial (http://www.neopets.com/~AdBlock).... but anyways, this should give you a general idea on how to do it on other sites that aren't very popular yet that has some random advert that just makes the layout look messed up.

In many instances, you might not have to script something to hide an awful portion of the source. The grease monkey script didn't delete the HTML, it just changed the style to make it invisible. Also I think adblock plus completely prevents the adverts from loading. I'm not 100% sure, but if I'm right that means it's not killing your bandwidth.

That NeoSite was built by a member, not Neo personally.

Meh. It's on neopets domain, so I just assumed it. I don't play neopets beyond making bots and crap for it to give to friends that just wont leave me the hell alone until they have something to use. I'm takin a guess it's a pet's page, eh?

lol, well, they got merchandising now. Even though they most likely make most of their money from ads, they probably make a damn good amount from their merchandise, cereal, neopets mall and such. Once your site is selling it's own products and it's surely making money off it them, advertisements are just cheesy.

If I have to I block images on Firefox, turn off the Flash plug-in on Internet Explorer. Advertisements really don't bother me, so I don't mess with them.

Ads dont bother me because I know in order to keep the site running they need ads. So I just try to ignore them. I like the ads though were it says shoot 3 ducks. Something like that. it keeps me entertained lol.
