It was the eve of destruction, and everyone knew it. A thick sense of failure and hopelessness hung in the air, smothering and intense. Today would forever impact the future: lives hung in the balance, and even the smallest domino could topple the scheme of civilization.

Voice 1:

It was for precisely this reason that Nathan's whistling drew him odd looks. It wasn't a display of jovial disregard, as many onlookers may have thought, or that he liked the tune (an old children's song he had learned when he himself was only about four). No, this was the sign of a man in oblivious denial. He hadn't a clue why everybody was so worried. It must have been one of those over sensational news stories; the people in his small town always seemed to buy into that sort of thing. Nathan was sure he'd hear all about it later, but he was busy now. He had an appointment to make, and he knew Bryan didn't like it when he was late.
