Just all the important and basic stuff. How much do you think it would cost in total?

For a GOOD petsite, take into consideration the following Estimates:

Template: $50-200
Website Core (Super-Secure & Optimized) $100-200
Secure Register, Login, Logout, User Home, System $50-150
Forums $60-120
Games $15-50/game
SEO / SEF $200

All the important stuff really :P

SEO / SEF $200
You can do that for free.

If your lucky you can get a really good site running for free.

Some things you can do yourself (so you don't have to pay people), and sometimes you'll get people to buy/give stuff for/to you

I would say minimum $300 but if you want something respectable then spend over $1k. Coding alone should be about 40-100 hours of work...cheap cheap coders are $10 an hour but good ones are $20-$50.

It would cost an arm and a leg to get it decent, not to say, professionally coded. We're talking anywhere from 10,000$ - 15,000$, a professional web 2.0 layout (HP grade), sets you back 2,000$ alone.

I would charge 100

alan is being a drama queen XD
I would say any amount between $500-$2000
but there are people onthese forums who can do it cheaper.

I know a pet site that's being coded by people -completely- new to php. They've just read the php + mySQL for dummies, and have managed to get everything coded. :3 You just need to put the work in, and you can do all the coding yourself.

a layout? for 2000 dollars?

I doubt that, but average from 200-1000, depending on the price of the coder and how good he/she was.

1. It still costs money and time to learn PHP

2. While you can pick up a book and start making a pet site, unfortunately it will end up with a lot of problems and need to be redone later one

Its not a good idea to just get up and make a pet site one day, especially if you are learning as you go, because you will find that your programming style improves, and then as a programmer you wouldn't want to modify the older code because its so obscure and poorly done, meaning it needs redone, and a lot of people follow the 'if it isn't broke, don't fix it' motto, so the site remains inconsistent, and while you will get some inconsistency in many pet sites, learning how to code off of one causes dramatic differences in the code from one script to the next, and causes things to break as things become more advanced.

This is why you should have close to 6 months of hard programming experience before you attempt a project of this scale. Of course, thats assuming you want to create a site that is on the list of sites with over 10,000 members

But how long would it take you, and at what quality would the code be? Would you continue support if something goes wrong, and continue to help upgrade the site, and would you just disappear one day? Also, would your code be easy for another programmer to come in and modify, would it be well documented and secure?

Running a full-blooded virtual pet site with quality images, scripts, etc. would take a few months of hard programming to complete. Why open up with basic features? Open up with a bang.

Some pet sites have that, but usually you have to start with the basics then work your way up, like marapets.

I'm waiting to see a pet site with admins and mods and such, except users can send in artwork and suggest features, the admins pick, and that's how the whole site would run. (Although that would never happen.)

But not every item, right?

If not, I meant that the admins pay for the servers and code the things, but the users send in everything to keep the site running.

I'm thinking right now.....how about different worlds, and each world would have a different style of artwork?
