Recently, we've been in talks with the owners of Virtualpetforums.com, Jag & Kael in a possible merger of our communities, and we believe that we should ask our members for input before doing so. Not only as VPF grown so fast in the past few months, it has shown great potential, and we believe that merging the two communities, it would be the best for the industry as well as our members.

Here are some possible details of the merger:
VPF would merge onto the VPL Domain
Users from VPF would keep name and titles
Users will decide on staff, via a vote

More details will emerge as the talks continue....

So, we come to you (our users), the users of VPL which have made our community possible. Should we merge and become even bigger? Please post your insights here. Ultimately Patrick and I will be making the decision, but your input is very valued to us and it is the only way we can make an informed, concise decision.

We look forward to your comments.

Cpvr & Patrick, Owners of VPL.

Users will decide on staff, via a vote

Does this mean that current staff from both boards would only retain their position if voted back in, or does that only refer to bringing in new staff members?

Staff from both boards will still have their postitions. New staff, however; will have to be voted in.

Ah.

Personally, I'm for this merger. I remember the impact merging with OfftopicBB had, and it was a fairly positive one. With VPL and VPF having their unique strenghts and member bases, merging the two can only increase growth (a la the snowball effect) and create a stronger forum.

I know that when OfftopicBB merged in it brought several users I didn't know, and a culture of its own. But I got to know those users, the cultures mingled, and evolved into an even better one for it, so that alleviates any concerns on my end that the "VPL feel" could be ruined by a merger.

The same thing will happen if we do indeed merge, but that "VPL Feel" will always be the same, and the community will not only get stronger, it will also become an even bigger, better, and friendlier community. It would be the best for the whole industry. VPF has also posted a thread asking its users for their inputs on the merger. http://www.virtualpetforums.com/index.php/topic,759.0.html

X-posted in VPF:

To me this sounds alright. However, I'm a bit concerned because VPL went down once before and lost GAWD! tons of members. If the two sites merge, then umm what happens if the board goes down again?
I think this concern is valid and should be thought about by everyone.
If no merger is made, then one board would be up even if the other is down...

I'm for it, but is there gonna be any kinda backup thingy? (I know I'm not technical lol forgive me) :)

If a merge did happen, what would be done about users whom have accounts on both forums?

Patrick

They're usernames would be combined.

What of users whom are banned on one board, but not the other, though? (A situation which already exists.)

Yeah I'm wondering that myself. Because some of the banned members on this forum have abused some of our current members which is bad and they were banned for that. But when this merge happens, The banned members will be unbanned?

I suppose (for anyone who is banned on one forum and not the other) would be unbanned and given a second chance.

Kael

That would be correct - second chances! :) You gotta love em! ;)

I am not in favor of the proposed merger. I like owning 50% of VPF with Kael, I like this community and just everything about VPF. If this were to happen, VPF wouldn't exist, It would just be a bigger VPL. There is nothing wrong with competition. If VPF sucked and no one liked it, I would consider it, but VPF is blossoming and merging would cut VPF's life short. VPL may have vBulletin and a fancy server, but that says nothing about the site, only thing that says is they have more money than Kael and I.

I put the post up to see what the members thought, there were a few yes votes scattered, but it seems a good part of the VPF community wants VPF to to stay, and I think that is how it should go.

VPL was good at one point and time and are coming back, maybe they will return to the high horse they were on before everything went down, maybe not. Only time will tell, but for now, VPF is staying VPF.

I never thought VPF would reach the heights it has. I am very proud of this forum, its members and staff, and owning 25% of VPL isn't enough get rid of this place.

So its basically settled, there will be no merger.

Yes, but the thing about back ups is that the owners are ALSO supposed to take back ups of the sites. I learnt that mistake when TeinoPets was on the same server and it went down and died also. But it is almost back up. Not just their fault ;) It was my fault aswell. Just like part of these forums going down is partly your fault.

Yes, but not all computers are safe as well.. I had backups, from the past. It's not my fault my computer couldn't hold the backups, because I didn't have enough power on my harddrive. How was it partly my fault? I wasn't around.

As a webmaster and owner of a site, it is your responsibility to make sure that the site is maintained correctly, back ups are taken, and that you try to increase the productivity of the site and activity of it.
I can see you are getting a little annoyed at me cpvr. Perhaps it was best that we did not merge.

I'm not annoyed at all. We already know that. We've been webmasters for a few years now. Every webmaster makes a mistake in their life, and that's a known fact. You can't tell me to make backups, when I had them, but I wasn't on to make new ones before the site crashed.
