View Full Version : Is Subeta's uptime a thing of the past?
If I remember correctly, Subeta had great servers last year that barely went down - they used to go weeks without downtime, but now their servers seem to go down every day...
Why do you guys think Subeta goes down so much? Do their servers suck?

xD Probably because their going downhill alas! The owner probably don't give a flying hoot because he has so many people hating/disliking him. I personally dislike the site, not the owner. There is nothing unique about it.
I don't think it is their server, but more of the proxy in front of it. If the proxy crashes it doesn't matter how functional the main clusters are, you will not get through.

Uptime is definitely a thing of the past.
Every time I seem to go on Subeta, I can hardly do anything as the site's so slow it's barely functionable.
I had to try on three different occasions just to answer the last Trivia question! XD
Put Subeta in a turtle race and they'd get beat. Seriously.
Do you remember when you used to be able to access Subeta and actually play the site for hours on end without any down messages?

@ cpvr:
Oh yes. I surely do. I think that time was during early-late 2006. On the weekends I'd be on for at least six hours a day--restocking, questing, and doing all that stuff. Subeta was so fun then. There was very little downtime, and not to mention there weren't any HA's and Legendaries, either. :P
Ahh, yes. I remember those days. Wasn't Subeta still young though? I believe they were on better servers back then, but now they're at a local datacenter.

Well, considering Subeta re-opened in September of 2004 they were actually about 2 years old at the time.
From what I have observed from my little over 2 years of being there, that even during 2006 their rate of growth was rather slow, even though they were gaining members. Now I recall a time during some sort of giveaway, that Keith said that Subeta hit 900 users online. It was phenominal. Now they're almost always over that number during their peak hours. But anyway. I think that during 2006 Subeta averaged 400-800 users online during peak, and then during night that number would fall to a mere 200-a little over 300 depending on the hour.
I personally didn't see a boom in members until Subeta introduced Human Avatars and then there was even more of a boom after the Longcat fiasco.
As of now, I think that the entire userload is too much for the servers to handle. This is not fact, but I'd assume that Subeta gets AT LEAST 5,000 visitors a day. (I guess you could even check that on the Alexa Rankings if you wanted more reliable proof.)

Right. Subeta did open up in 2002.

Of course; their alexa rank shows. I still wonder how Subeta is growing - their growth is all viral. Keith has never purchased advertisements on any site. He'd rather not - I believe because Keith's vision in the past for Subeta was keeping a small community (correct me if I'm wrong) and Keith used to pure inactive members in the past.

Yes, the whole longcat fiasco really helped Subeta. Subeta gets at least 25,000 visitors a day. They're closer to Marapets (in terms of traffic and such) but they don't have as many users.
There are a 180,996 users of Subeta
Now lets look back. Keith used to delete inactive accounts if the member didn't log in for 3 months or so, but I believe he hasn't done it in a while.
Why do you think so many people joined Subeta once they released human avatars?

Keith advertised on tektek, which caused many people from Gaia to join Subeta.
And inactive accounts are deleted after 1 year without activity.

Yeah. And if I remember right, they said that all accounts have been logged in due to some error on their side so that they can't see which accounts have been inactive for over a year.

Sucky, I'd love to have my old account back after being improperly banned :P Ah well.
I can't say much on the subject. My little sister plays Subeta now but I put her on heavy watch because I still am not a fan of subeta. I make sure she doesn't do something to mess things up and get in trouble (aka dont mess with the mods)
I recall when I played in 2005 the site ran pretty well. I was big on RSing. All I hear now is that subeta gets a boatload of errors. They used to be hosted by a company right? It feels like ever since they left the site has been struggling for up time.

What was the reason?

Yes, they were. I believe they were hosted by ThePlanet or another server company. I'm not sure.
