View Full Version : What do you think is holding Subeta back?
What do you guys think is holding Subeta back from becoming the second largest pet site on the net today? Do you think their servers are holding them back - or is it their staff members?
Let's discuss.
Staff members honestly. While they try their best to help out with their users, I felt like I was continually lied to. There are many holes and gaps in the logic which I haven't encountered with other pet sites, which puts a negative mark on Subeta.
From what I've seen and heard on these forums, I'd say it's their danged servers. They're always down or having problems or whatever.
I think it's ridiculous.

I generally experience a rude vibe from staff members.

You can't get help, the staff is curt, rude, and some of the members make you feel very unwelcome.

I always got good vibes from the artists, and at least one of the user admin.
But then, it's been a long time.

Staff is kindabit rude to newbies. So are other users.

The down time is hard, when your playing something, and you get up to play, and your page can't be displayed, due to server/proxey settings and it lasts 2 weeks??? There has to be a good reason, that's why I wandered up here!

Hm... It's annoying that they rolled back the servers, just as I was doing well with items and quests.

I think they need to get their server troubles taken care of. I love the site, but it is SOOO slow. ;_; That's the only reason why I don't play.
I've also heard of a lot of bad disputes among staff members. They should get that taken care of too.

I'd agree with anyone that says it's the users, considering about five people pretty much bit my head off for calmly asking if the Potion Lottery was rigged when I saw the same people winning what? Five times a month? They basically accused me of looking to get things for free when the Potion Lottery is anything but. I noticed that these five or so users were buddy-buddy, which brings me to my next point:
The cliques that some of the users form is partially what made up my dislike. If you're not in one of these cliques, consider yourself lucky if the reaction from them you get isn't being lambasted or simply ignored. I had been a user for about a year at this point so I don't think it has to do with being new.
Not to mention the poor support, as I never got my account back after not receiving my password and having sent at least two emails. This was in November of 2006 btw.
They have nice art and good features in general, I just think that they need to tighten their stance on rudeness. I've never seen a clique gang up on someone and accuse them of crap without being reprimanded (barring Neopets because I don't think this is an issue of favoritism). I'm sorry but I go on the internet to have fun, and it's not like I won't question something that I find fishy.

Yeah I know, I asked about referrals and they all started ganging up on me and telling me I was stupid. And the staff I was wondering about, never dealt with them.....but I always post trivia and enter like 200 tickets and never win a thing and never get chosen. I see favoritism there. I don't like it when people get a tiny bit of power and then start taking advantage of it and treating people badly.....Grr a few people I see chatting everytime I log in and they just pound on newbies. They never get off either this particular clique.... Nobody asks to be my friend either...I make better friends on Neopets. But Subetas artwork great. that really is a shame.

As a long user of Subeta the friend thing is..odd, I (used to) frequent the Shoutbox and the few friends I have on the site I got from there. You have to make friends, the cliques are there however. I see it mostly from the older users and older staff to younger users.
The staff might be a huge issue, many of them don't like each other and there are those who work on the site and have no idea what's wrong. They are generally nice but they have no idea of the underworkings of subeta. And when they do stand up they are fired.
The site is very...uppity, they believe that if you don't know the answer to a question than you should read the rules thourghly. It would seem that people just don't like answering questions and that some things are to be talked about in private.
Moontavia, did you ask about your own referrals or just referals in general? If it's your own then the staff want private emails about that just to keep other people from "modding" I'm not sure why but w/e.
The Lottery is a very heated topic, many people who win constantly most likely have multiple accounts and the staff hasn't gotten around to finding out yet. I was around when one user had won about 5 in a row and a staff member was surprised that no one had noticed he had many, many accounts. She only investigated it because we asked her to. (we were in the IRC channel at the time and it was apparently a PM) Believe me half the site thinks the lottery is rigged but just won't say anything about it.
As for getting the passwords back, I'd blame Keith for starting the whole mess and then getting rid of David who I know was working hard to recover hundreds of accounts and passwords.
Lots of things are holding the site back. Like the inability to make a profit nowadays. They only reason I have SP is cause I'm a long time user and I worked hard. Newer users are having a bit of an issue. I'd have to say though that it's the general "better than you" feeling that lives on the site. The mods are better than the other players, the older users are better than the younger ones, the younger ones are better than whomever just joined 5 seconds ago cause they've learned how to make 10k in a day.

I think it's because the site is run by a bunch of kids. Which means that they probably only give half a crap about their own friends.
Oh here's a juicy bit I found on Google. It's a petition against subeta called 'subeta.org is evil'!
Here's just a small excerpt from it:
"So how does this site run, why is this iPetition created? Because Subeta is abundant with illegal troubles, it's created by a mere teenager who cannot protect his users (Subeta has been hacked a tremendous amount of times leading to loss of money and personal information). This teenager lives in LUXURY apartments, emancipated from his parents, admits to underage drinking, drug use and gay sex. There is no doubt he uses user DONATIONS to pay for his lifestyle. He does not pay taxes and claims to own a business despite not having a business license.
Ya know I'm a bit bothered by this myself. Not enough to grab a sign and go picketing. I like playing the game. Maybe we could all benefit if someone (preferably an adult or at least someone responsible and business savvy) would buy out Subeta and run it properly.

I was unaware of the fact that you need a license to run a petsite...
However Keith has made it no secret that he is in fact gay and uses the profits of the site to fund his own needs. He bought the place he's currently living in with money from the site. Many people just assume that he uses all of the profits for the site, however if you ask him he makes it no secret. This fact rubs me the wrong way so much, I try very hard to not think about it simply because it makes me mad.
With him being 17 and gay, it's no surprise that he's had gay sex. As a teenager, I know half my school has had sex. That doesn't bother me, it's his life. I don't understand how that's a bad thing unless the petition is going for the Christian vote. The drug thing however is something new to my eyes/ears. I can't vouch for that.
BUT It is true that the site is run by a teenager. He might not be the best person to run whole site by himself but he's never going to sell, he makes way to much money to let it go.

How does Keith's lifestyle at all affect the content and quality of the site? "emancipated from his parents, admits to underage drinking, drug use and gay sex." It's not as if he's a serial killer or anything. None of those things are even that bad! That's HIS life, and doesn't really affect Subeta in any way shape or form.
I think a better attack against subeta would be "my Swampie admits to underage drunking, drug use, and gay sex" And quite frankly, none of those things would change my feelings towards Swampie. ;)

It does if users money is funding his habits.
anyway, about the petition. I assume they can prove their allegations? If you are going around making comments like these you should be ready.

It could affect the site if users see how "cool keith is" , they may want to copy his lifestyle. Which I believe not a good one to have. It's been said a million times but I'll make it a million and one, drugs are bad..really bad.
But his influence (if he does post about the things he does and make it sound cool) can result in many bad choices, broken lives, and teen pregnancies.
As far as I know he hasn't really done anything like that, so I have no problem.
I only posted this article to see if we can debunk it or not. If not, then we can keep an eye out and make sure the afore mention catastrophe doesn't happen.
I have little sisters who play on subeta and I want to make sure their gaming experience is fun but non-influential.

If I remember correctly Keith is 18 now not 17.

It's the server problems.
That's what got me to stop playing it; it annoyed me so very much.
I didn't really ever talk to a staffie, so eh, perhaps they're bad enough to drive people away? I couldn't say.
But I personally believe the server thing is HORRIBLE.>.<

omg! I completely agree with you! I have high speed internet cause I hateslow page loading and it still take more than five minutes for the subeta home page to load! Makes you wonder if they ever even bought one of those few $2k servers they said they bought.
Others have said that the lag is due to "recoding". I say bullcrap. Whenever Rescreatu had to recode, the lag was never that bad and it was over quick. And that was before the got new servers. So there's no excuse for subeta to be this crappy.
"They" did buy new server(s?) (I only recall one, but maybe it's two and I'm completely out of the loop ;D). Two, have you ever considered Subeta is much, much bigger than Rescreatu? The recode takes ages because as much as I know, we have very few programmers who're working on the recode, and on trying to fix the bugs the current coding has (which consists into patching up, which isn't the best thing to do, hence the recode).
Letting people have more pets might have to do with the lag. It might not look like it, but these fellas eat space up o:
I, too, think the lag is horrible, especially when it's your working place XDD So yeah. I'd definitely say lag problems are a major issue. It's not like we like the slow page loading, either! XD
I didn't really ever talk to a staffie, so eh, perhaps they're bad enough to drive people away? I couldn't say. That makes me sad :c
User admins have been wonderful to me in the past. Very patient and helpful.
If I have any complaints, it's going to be about those servers.

Ah, thank you to you and Moontavia for giving me more insight and telling me of experiences on the site.
Like I said, I haven't been on the site since November of 2006 and I'm guessing the 5-account thing happened afterwards, otherwise I would think that there'd be less backlash than what I actually got. I'm pretty sure the Potion Lottery was fairly new at that point and Tickets weren't transferred as gifts until maybe October or so? I know it wasn't available at the beginning. Maybe those users in particular were known for being nasty or were a particularly ignorant bunch. Who knows? It was more than a year ago so I really shouldn't dwell on it. I'll just remember the good times and sleep comfortably knowing that my stay was fun up until the passwords stopped being sent.
What mess? It couldn't have been the Longcat fiasco as this happened more than a year before that occurred. Did something happen that I don't know about?
Here's three good quotes from this thread that I agree with.
The site is very...uppity, they believe that if you don't know the answer to a question than you should read the rules thourghly. It would seem that people just don't like answering questions and that some things are to be talked about in private.

I've been an active member for almost two years, and the lag has generally been the same... Subeta /never/ loaded particularly fast.
I'll share some of my personal guidelines that I've been following.
- Be prepared to lose everything on your account. Glitches are unavoidable and being frozen is the inevitable fate of 85% of the userbase.
- If there's a glitch, don't bother reporting it. Looking through every bug report isn't worth posting something the staff may take ages to read and never fix.
- Don't get your hopes up over anything. If they haven't added a feature yet, pretend you never heard anything about it. The same applies to fixing bugs, new servers, and getting your frozen account back.
- ALWAYS multitask while playing Subeta to accommodate the lag.

They nust have it down as I can not get on the site! Hope they fix it soon!
I think it's the layout.
There's so much white, very little color, and one teeny tiny little image.
It doesn't show the professionalism that Subeta is. X: Gotta love customCSS.
