Just wondering. I know ads play a part, and probably something like the cash shop on subeta, but I don't quite understand how it works for people who are getting thousands a month.

It's a really simple concept. First off, ads play a huge role if you have them. The most commonly used, are google ads (found on Marapets). The way that they work is cost per click, and cost per 1 thousand views. So basically, each time a person clicks your ad you make some revunue, depending on your site, your content, etc. your CPC could be be anywhere from .05 - 2.00 or so. Same goes with the page views, when you reach 1000 impressions, revenue is earned. This is extremely easy to do if you have 50 or so users that stay on your site for a couple of hours a piece, a day. As your site grows, the number you will make off ads increases exponentially. Neopets google ad rakes them in tens of thousands a month.
Next, if your site is popular enough (Such as nutrinopets or subeta) revune can be made off of donations, although it is technically illegal without paying taxes, unless you use the donation correcty (IE - what you claim the donation will be used for). Say you have 50 users, that pay 5 dollars a month for benefits, you've just raked in 250$/mo. You can see how this works out, if you have 1,000 users that do it, you're making 5,000$/mo.

Making money from adsense without paying taxes is illegal as well. If your making any kind of money in any form what so ever online you need to pay taxes.

just wondering Patrick, do you pay taxes for the stuff online? how do you do it without a real-life job? I know they take out of check, but how do you do it without that?

It doesn't really have anything to do with getting a check or not. If you receive any type of money over a certain amount (what is it...$1000 or something? I'm not quite sure), you have to report that to IRS and file it. It's just like a real job in the real world. Yes, most big petsites file taxes :P

Yes I pay taxes...I don't even want to think about the absurb amount the government took from me last year :(
Most online ad companies will send a w2 form to you at the end of each year for taxes. I have an accountant who takes care of the rest for me.

oh I see. google does I believe, and I see.
Check out Aaron Russo's movie, "America from Freedom to Fascism", on Google Video for FREE. It is a movie all about taxes and how the Fed tax in the US goes AGAINST the US Constitution.

How do you get the deal with the pageviews?

You have to have the prove of stats. Also, just because you receive over 1,000 impressions doesn't mean you'd make a lot. There's a few CPM advertising companies out there that pay per impression, but usually advertisers that use the company have low pay-rates, so say if your CPM (cost per impression) is like $0.05, then you'd get paid 5 cents for every 1,000 impressions, right? But usually if you have a ton of pageviews, which is sometimes known as "impressions", then you'd get better pay-rates.

A nice little thing called Google Adsense...just google it and you should be good to go!
You can find more about Google Adsense, at its adsense homepage (https://www.google.com/adsense/login/en_US/?hl=en_US&sourceid=aso&subid=ww-en_US-et-ads1_D&medium=link&gsessionid=cM2dmVR_les).
There's also a lot more companies you can use to make money with a VPS, but we're not at this point right now, but if users ask for companies to possibly use, we'll supply a list in a new thread. :D

Well, when I worked for Zetapets, and Amanda was around, we used Metareward.com. I'm not exactly sure how good it is now though.

Ad's are a must if a site becomes popular, unless you have a strong fanbase willing to pay a premium subscription or money for one off package deals etc.

Yes, but if you have high premium prices, then you should cut-down on the ads as well.
i know for any site that i create, when ever someone pays for a premium upgrade, i remove the ads from the site for them.
