I have been tested out Conduits Community Toolbar System. You build your own Community Toolbar that plugs into your Firefox or if your wierd, Internet Explorer.

With this Toolbar, you can Customise it's look and add many options such as RSS Messages so your members will get your latest news without being on your Petsite.

On top of all of this, you will earn revenue from our Toolbar if it is active. Conduit have reported that the usual revenue generated for 2,500 Installed and Active Toolbars is $750 a month..
Conduit make thier money through the Search Box in the Toolbars, which lead to Search Engines Powered by and Monetised by Google.. When a user of your Toolbar uses the Search Box, and clicks a Google Sponsered link, it generates revenue, for Conduit, inwhich you gain a commision from.....

For really active Petsites, i suggest the following three:

Conduit - $100.84
Google - $117.27
Kontera - $3.14 (Signed up 2 days ago)

Not bad for a site that opened a month ago, so if you wanna check it out go to:
Conduit.com - Free community toolbar Builder in a Few Easy Steps

can you somehow tell which users are using it? If so, you could offer them benefits for using it, like... free premium or something.

It doesnt tell you "who" is using it, but it does tell you how many people currently have it Installed and Active (Shown not Hidden) ..

The Toolbars are downloadable, so you have no way of knowing who uses it. Somebody may have never heard of your site but got the Toolbar Download link somehow.

Do you think this is better than using ads? I wonder...

depends on how active your site is, and if it can benifit from using a Toolbar, but i use
Google Adsense, Conduit, and Kontera, so why not use it and your ads?

You build a virtual pet site from a host. Some free hosts are freehostia, freewebs, and xZeroHosting.
Or if you want to buy a web host you get php, mysqualm bandwith and more. Some web hosts are dreamweaver, and hostgator.
