Anyone Else Suffer From Severe Migraines?

Rate this Entry
Just curious as to who else is.

For the past two months I've missed a decent chunk of school. Why? Severe migraines.

I am medicated for them however the medication isn't working anymore. We've put off going to the neurologist until now. For the past few months they have slowly increased in frequency. Of course the amount of pain I'm in varies once in a while but for the most part, it puts me out for 2-3 days at a time from school until it's gone on it's own. Even with medication, they leave me shaking, nauseated, seeing auras(mine are squiggly lines, makes it impossible for me to read or see really anything out of my right eye), unbearable pain(unable to stand even a tiny sliver of light, the tick of a clock, ect.) and even to the point where I'm vomiting on and off. They believe the spike in frequency and the level of how severe is due to the concussion I suffered over the summer (I blacked out for a minute, didn't know what was going on for about 3 hours and I forgot everything that happened that day) which I have to get a Cat-scan to see if there was any damage from it.

Now the migraines are lasting almost a week long, the pain surging on and off. Next week, if the two newest medications I'm prescribed(one which has made the pain 100x worse and making me very sick, trying the next tomorrow), I'll be put on much higher medications to prevent them. Right now the pain has dulled enough to let me function but my sleeping is completely out of whack from this week.

For those who don't have to deal with these, you are lucky. Imagine taking a cinder block and getting hit in the head with it, then that's how it feels (at least for me).

For those who do, do you have any sort of prevention methods aside from medications? I honestly hate taking medicine but if mine are getting this bad, I may have no other options but I'm curious to know. Before they got this bad, hiding in a dark room, playing very soft classical music with an ice pack over my head used to do the trick.

Well, I'm off to try and sleep once again. It's almost 4 am. Thank god no school for me tomorrow. More appointments and such.

There might be something else wrong in your head, you need to see the specialist. I knew I had a friend and his wife was just like this. I never got the chance to ask him fully what type of treatment she received and such.

I have a friend who suffers from migraines, but normally a pill (which I forgot the name) would do the trick. It's not bad enough to make her feel sick all over or anything, but she gets in to a horribly bad mood...*shudder*

As cpvr said, you should probably see a specialist to know the exact problem. What I would normally do is just lie down and wait for the pain to subside, but...

Anyway, good luck ith this. I hope you feel better soon.

@cpvr - I wouldn't be surprised. My mom thinks I ended up inheriting what she got which has something to do with the hormone levels in her body. I'm already on birth control to level out those hormones but with the new pills I got for my migraines, I have to stop taking them because they interfere with how the pills work and everything. Hopefully I'll be able to see a specialist soon to get this all solved. I actually like school and be able to do things xD.

@Hikaru - They just put me on 10mg of Maxalt and 25mg of Imitrex for mine. Maxalt didn't work to well and actually made things much worse so they took me off that as soon as I called and told them the pain got unbearable and 10x worse when it kicked in x'D. Thanks for the luck =]. It finally broke earlier this morning and I was so glad it did. Living a week in unbearable head pain sucked so much x__x

It's definitely worth it to get a second opinion here, as a lot of doctors seem to be pretty nonchalant in looking for anything further than migraines.

    Whereabouts does the pain resonate?

You could try out migraine massage therapy, either on your own or by finding someone who specialises. I'm not sure how pricey it is, but it might be worth looking in to. I'd also suggest trying static/white noise at varying frequencies, I can't really explain how, but it seems to work for me! Alternatively, co-codamol is a really good prescription drug to get for pretty much anything that starts in the head, it's always stopped the pain of the migraines within minutes of them starting for me. I'm not sure if it's easy to get ahold of/generally any good for anyone else, so I'd take that suggestion with a pinch of salt.

Either way, good luck! Migraines can be absolutely terrible, so I've got my fingers crossed for you. (=

@Sirkowskii That sucks. I didn't think birth control pills and migrane pills would mix like that. Have you looked into getting the IUD for birth control? It doesn't have too many side effects or anything.

My mom also suffers from this and has no pills other than over the counter stuff. She suggests cold compresses around the neck and over the eyes. Also an extremely dark room, also wearing an eye mask helps as well.

I'm currently battling the tail-end of a bout right now. They usually are worst when it's that time of the month for me. I share your pain, completely. Mine last for 2-3 days as well, and I feel TERRIBLY guilty about missing so much school from them. Once I had one so bad that I threw up 7 times in a row one night. My auras are flashing lights, kind of like a white strobe light. Over the counter medicine never worked for me, so currently I'm prescribed Sumatriptan, which works pretty well. I used to take the pills which were 50mg (take one pill), but now I take the nasal spray because it's actually a lower dosage (20mg) and it works much faster. Usually I get tension or sinus headaches on top of my migraine headaches (I think the tension/sinus headaches may trigger the migraines), so sometimes after I take the Sumatriptan, the migraine goes away but I still have the throbbing tension headache. I take Excedrin for that (the tension headache kind has 500mg Acetaminophen per pill, and you take 2) and it usually takes care of it. I used to take birth control pills but I HATED the hormonal effects of them. I have a copper IUD now and it has been a godsend--I highly recommend it.

Best of luck with your troubles, and let me know if you get any leads or if my suggestions help if you follow them. <3 Hope you feel better. Migraines are no fun. Yesterday I was out cold the whole day with one, plus the tension headache on top of it like I said. Still had residual pain this morning so I took some more Excedrin and it calmed it down.

I used to have a really bad case of cluster headaches. It's like the mother of all headaches. >.< My doctor told me the best way to describe it is the combination of tension headache, migraine and vascular headache.

I used to bang my head on the wall because of how painful it was. It really felt like hell. I took several prescription pills for it which really knocked me out and my legs felt like jelly since I can't stand by myself after it took effect. I had to take more than a year off uni because he said it was probably one of my stressors. I went back home to the province/country-side and the headaches eased up after a few months of rest.

I still get it every now and then, but it's not as bad. I only take a OTC pill (Lagaflex) when I feel it's starting up. It was prescribed for me by my doctor. I checked online and it's not OTC in other countries, but it is OTC in mine.
