Maynard: I think most of us grew up in a pretty sterile environment. A
lot of that stuff just wasn't around. It's all pretty much peaches and
cream . . . flowers . . . everything's nice, ignore all the bad stuff.
And the world's just not like that. And I think that the sooner people
get to the point where they realize that the ugly stuff is just as
important as the beautiful stuff - it goes hand in hand, I think that
we can get on with evolving. -The Tool Page: Articles

A lot of sites fail to realize the power of SEO and ranking on the search engines. Search engines can drive a lot of traffic to a site - especially if they focus on driving new links to the site and have certain pages opened. A pet site's forum/blog is a good way to get pages indexed - especially if they're fully optimized.

I only really try referrals for sites I frequently visit. Considering one of those sites is Neo, which it'd be tough to refer there since most people interested in petsites already have heard of it and either have an account or made the decision not to sign up, Paladore is the only one I refer too. I also tried for Petgamer back in the day, but kinda failed at at. xD
I do the same as rusticshadow.
It's always nice to see your referral count rise on the smaller sites. I have so many referrals on various websites. It's crazy because I don't do a whole lot of promotion on my referral links like I did years ago. I have more referrals on Boopets than I do on Paladore though. Interesting.

I only mess with referrals if the rewards you get for doing it are actually worth the effort to do so. Like if you get free money credit for referring your friends, that would be great. Refer 10 friends and you don't have to pay a monthly sub or pay for your next 5 items.
I generally do referrals only if I really want something from the prize system because I am painfully shy. I get a little sick just thinking of trying to talk new people into joining sites, and since I'm so picky I don't play many. Meaning most of my friends are from those sites, and therefore already have accounts.
For instance, Verpets. I need 8 more people to sign up under me in order to get the prize I want. No dice, though, because I don't know anyone. I don't know how the flapjacks I got the first two referrals. o-o
I ALSO don't know many places where I'm allowed to post referral links. DA, FA, VPL. Those are the places I know people MIGHT be interested.
So unless I'm actually desperate, I probably won't do it.
I'm not popular enough. c:

I don't really use referral systems at all-then again I know very few people personally who are into virtual pet sites as it is. I think I've only gotten a gift for referring someone on Subeta, and on Ichumon I credited my sister for referring me.
