How do you feel about pet sites having advertisements? Would you rather see a cash shop/account upgrades feature instead of a pet site having advertisements?

With how annoying ads usually are to the players, I think getting creative with account upgrades is much better for player experience and for the game.
What type of account upgrades would you like to see? Do you think it’s a good idea to offer users more pm space, higher signature space and more quests plays(if there’s a limit) via account upgrades?

Pet site advertisements can be bit annoying at times depending on how they are done. The way I handle pet advertisements is through the use of journals. In the journals users can create up 3 large items, 5 smaller items, 1 mascot, 1 banner and music to go with it. The journals may contain any user generated content the user wishes to showcase however a fee is involved if they want to advertise pet content within the journal. However the mascot is actually free for the user to use.

The advantage of this way is you don't have the pet advertisements all over the place but situated in one section called news that the users can browse through.

Luxury type of upgrades that improve playing experience without giving away the competitive parts of the game.
What type of upgrades do you think would work best though?

How much do you think this fee should be for a user? $2 or up to $10? Also, what if users were able to purchase an “advertisement fee” browsing experience on the game? Would this be a feasible option or not really?

In the current version of my website Duelingpets is setup with in game currency mechanics such as points and emeralds. Emeralds is the premium currency for my website. Currently I am not taking actual cash such as dollars from users. Can you explain to me Cpvr what an advertisement fee is? I am not really familiar with that term.

Also sorry for taking so long to respond to this post as I kind of got a bit busy with life and I just recently came back online.

The advertisement fee for your users would be an account upgrade feature. Therefore, if one of your users decided not to have any “advertisements” displayed while playing your game, then this upgrade would be perfect for them.

I was kind of curious how that would work. For the current version of my website, it wouldn't really fit all that much since ads are just restricted to just the journals. Plus the players would be the ones creating the ads. On the other side of the coin I wouldn't want my website cluttered with a bunch of ads on each of the pages. I think I might try to go with an approach similar to FA for layout of the ads, since the way they do it feels a bit less intrusive. They have two ads on top of the page and three on the bottom. I might go with one ad on top and possibly 1 - 2 ads on the bottom of the page.

I think I would give users the ability to create ads regardless if they are a free account or member account that would appear on the top or bottom of the screen. I feel that having users pay to remove ads would of kind of annoy them if they couldn't afford the cost or didn't feel like spending cash for that feature. For now my website will be ad free until I decide to change it. The ads section would probably be a future feature some time down the line which probably would have a dollar amount, whereas the journal version would be just based on points and emeralds. I figure that would easier for both users.

I rather see users spend money to get a member account to do more things or money to get additional visibility via ads on the website itself. I kind of want to design the website in such a way that the ads are less annoying to those that don't like ads, but allowing a small amount to remain up at any one point in time.

This method would only work if you’re using a specific advertising company on your game and your users “won’t be” creating the ads. However, I think your concept of allowing users to create ads is quite interesting. Would you charge your users a fee to place their own ads?

Thanks Cpvr. :) As far as journal ads will go, it will be virtual pet currency either emeralds or points with a 5 - 10% return to the central bank.

Most people hate ads, it's why I believe that having a cash shop/account upgrades feature on a pet site would be more welcoming for most people. Although, the cost of items and upgrades need to be considerate for members to be interested in using it.

With how annoying ads can be nowadays, I would much rather see an option to upgrade or even donate to the site rather than have no choice but to deal with the ads.

If it is a site that I know I will use frequently, I am more than willing to pay for upgrades or even donate.

My self I hate ads, I always run an ad blocker and if I can't block ads (popup that says disable ads you can't view the website) then I leave. However, I don't mind ads advertising upgrades and vanity items.

This is exactly what most people do these days with using any website or service which comes with ads. If their ad blocker can't work, they will end up leaving the site. I'm facing this with using YouTube now.
