Algorithms has made us to lose the thrill of just randomly discovering something online.

Back in the days, the internet was like a rabbit hole where people used to get into, get lost in the process and somehow run into something they didn't know about.

Nowadays, algorithms curate everything perfectly. People just know where to go in the internet and find things. Algorithms has made us lose the thrill of unexpected discoveries on the internet.

What are your thoughts on this?

They also feed us certain interests and topics based upon our interactions on the app. For example, if you interact with "food" topics or "games", your timeline will be full of this type of content.

Sometimes it'll feed you random content as well to see if you'll interact with it as well.

This has spark a lot of debate online and it is killing creativity. Before, you could just browse random blogs or YouTube and find hidden gems. Now, algorithm has turn everything to what “they think” you like. It’s like your freedom to explore has reduced.

That's right and if you search more about a particular artist, for example, on TikTok. You tend to see more videos from the said artist over a period of 7 days or more. If you ask me, I would say algorithms have made being possible to discover things online better, but we have to know when we are spending more time online.

I agree with you totally. All these carefully curated contents shown to us by algorithms doesn't allow us to explore different ideas. What the platforms do is give us safe recommendations and it doesn't really allow us to stumble on something new that would just wow us and spark new tastes and thoughts.

I agree lmao. The surfacing of content with their algorithm is somewhat annoying. I like using their searching feature if I'm looking for something specific though.

I like watching rap freestyles and funny videos a lot, so I tend to save those. I also think if you save/like those type of posts, you'll see those more frequently in your feed.

Also, if you don't watch something all the way through, you generally won't see it on your feed next time.

There are times though that you just feel like randomly browsing to learn new things. But just opening your homepage, they have shown you possible things that could catch your fancy based on your history. And your fancy would actually be caught with one of the things they show you and before you know it, you have completely forgotten about exploring.
