Recently, an Activision executive revealed the development costs for three games in the Call of Duty franchise.

He disclosed how much it took to develop these games, which were released between 2015 and 2020. The total costs for these three Call of Duty games ranged from $450 million to $700 million.

In fact, these disclosed amounts are the highest development costs ever reported by a major video game company, surpassing almost any estimates or leaks from analysts.

  • Black Ops III (2015): “Treyarch developed the game over three years with a creative team of hundreds of people, and invested over $450 million in development costs over the game’s lifecycle.” (Kelly also discloses that it has sold 43 million copies.)
  • Modern Warfare (2019): “Infinity Ward developed the game over several years and has spent over $640 million in development costs throughout the game’s lifecycle.” (41 million copies sold)
  • Black Ops Cold War (2020): “Treyarch and Raven Software took years to create the game with a team of hundreds of creatives. They ultimately spent over $700 million in development costs over the game’s lifecycle.” (30 million copies sold)

I always viewed AAA games having really high costs for development because of the quality. But I didn't envisage that it could cost as much as hundreds of millions of dollars to develop. It is not bad though as long as the studio is running a profit. The sales is also mind blowing as well. You know that Call of Duty has grown beyond being a game. It is an annual global event at it's level now.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 is still on the way because from the information I have, it's going to be launched 14th November 2025.
