Choosing the Right Blogging Platform

If you want to start a blog, you basically have three options:

• Self-hosted blog: You buy your own domain and hosting, then set up your blog on platforms like WordPress.
• Website builders: You sign up for website builders like weebly or wix. You either choose premium option, with your own domain, or choose free option. Most website builders give you free domain for first year.
• Third-party blogging sites: You can use platforms like Medium or HubPages to publish your posts, you can even use their monetization feature to make money.

The choice of your blogging platform depends on your goal. If you want make money you need to choose self hosted option.

It's best to grab your own wordpress software and host yourself and make a pretty awesome page.

I'll always choose self-hosted and typically WordPress.

WP powers nearly half on the internet's websites and blogs but not just blogs, the main websites as well. It's fairly secure, updated, and widely used.

Self-hosted is better because you own it. A third-party host can shut down anytime and remove your account and you agreed to that by joining because it is always in their terms, in order to protect them from damages.

Third-party hosting is like renting an apartment - it's not yours. Self-hosting is like buying a house - it's yours and you have access to the database.

I typically go with self hosting, I prefer to use Joomla over Wordpress. I feel like Joomla is easier to install, and easier to customize over Wordpress personally. Plus I find the ACP easier to navigate too. I want full control over every aspect of my blog so I feel like this is the best solution for my needs.

I'll always go with self hosting as I prefer to host my own websites. I'm more familiar with wordpress over any other blogging platform, so it's my go to software whenever I'm running a blog.

I haven't used Joomla or Drupal though. I've used Hubpages in the past.

Anyone that wants to make blogging a viable business for himself or herself should go with self hosting. With self hosting, you don't have the platform restricting your freedom on what you can do with your blog. You can run ads and do customization as much as you can with your self hosted blog. I know it is expensive upfront but it is worth it if blogging is supposed to be a business.
