Contest idea - Win a PHP book

Discussion in 'Contests' started by cpvr, Jun 24, 2012.

  1. Well, I've had this PHP book sitting in my closet for a while now, and I'm quite curious as to what we could do - in regards to a contest.

    This is the book:

It's on amazon as well, and sells for $30 http://www.amazon.com/PHP-World-Wide-Second-Edition/dp/0321245652

So, does anyone have any contest ideas for this?

  2. @cpvrcpvr Im clicking, but I cant look inside it? *lol*
Maybe find someone looking to learn PhP, and they could write a paragraph or something about something?

  4. Do you already have it? It looks a bit dated, it's from 2004.

  5. Yes, I do. It's sitting right here. I bought it back in 04/05 when I was learning to code, then I didn't want to learn anymore.

  6. Ideas:
    • Add the book on to the prize for the banner contest (I don't like that one)
    • A small posting contest with rigorous requirements to be held on the Programming General board. I could think of something more snazzy for that. Below is a start, maybe.
      • The objective could be to code a script. It doesn't have to be for the site, it could be any script, just to give the user motivation to go out and start to learn how to code with tutorials on search engines. (Not necessarily the best way to begin learning, believe me, I know. The only reason why I'm saying it here is because you'll be getting a book in the end that you can read and troubleshoot your code with. I dunno. If you don't like it suggest something that could make it better or that is more effective)
      • Existing coders can be judges.
      • With a little TLC and teamwork, I think that would be a good one ^^^^^
    • A guide contest to boost the # of guides on the Guide board. The person with the most amount of Guides in x amount of time wins the book. (Kind of lame for a programming book.. But effective.)
    • I don't know. Maybe I'll think of more bizarre ideas later. Check this for edits.

  7. I've been told by wiser coders that the older the source is, the less reliable it is.
So maybe it's harmful to give away this book?

  8. A fair bit has changed in PHP since 2004 ... when it was written, so it would teach a fair bit of outdated information. i.e. it will likely tell you to use the mysql_* family of functions for hitting the database which has been deprecated since being published. So for that reason I would say it makes a better paper weight than for source material.

  10. Thanks so much! ^-^ *hug*

  11. YES. THIS. I love Rails <3

  12. Why not write up a basic tutorial on it or something?

  13. To get into Rails you should be familiar with programming, otherwise you'll have a steep learning curve in front of you. Furthermore, the first time setup is more complicated than a standard LAMP. I'd have no idea how a real basic tutorial could look like, but I used the following Tutorial to start with RoR and its very actual as it focuses on Rails 3.2:

    http://ruby.railstutorial.org/

    and not to forget:

    http://railscasts.com/

  14. I vote for a PHP tutorial contest. but that's just my opinion XD
