Offering incentives for returning players on holidays is a good way to gain new members, and activity on pet sites.

Do you celebrate holidays on your pet site? How do you reward your members during the holidays?

Rewarding members during holidays is a great incentive and shows appreciation for the community. Many pet sites do this through an Advent Calendar, where users can collect items and points throughout the month of December.

Other pet sites might give out gifts on specific days throughout the month.

Flight Rising celebrates various micro-holidays, as does Subeta. Marapets also hosts special weather-themed events.

Neopets features plots and events, which can be similar to holiday celebrations, and they also offer an Advent Calendar.

What are micro holidays?

What are micro holidays?
Micro-holidays are smaller, themed events in games or virtual communities that usually don’t last as long as major holidays. Instead of celebrating traditional real-world holidays, they often feature unique in-game activities, exclusive items, and challenges.

For example, in Flight Rising, micro-holidays focus on the elemental flights, while Subeta has events like Fireside, Luminaire, and Survival, each inspired by real-world seasons or holidays but with a creative twist.

Ahh, so mini events? Anything that rewards members can benefit a community/site.

I think all sites should do something, as most people tend to be busy for extra stuff online.

Holiday incentives are a great concept which can be used to entice members as well as attract other members into joining. Like any other web-sites many pet sites also come up with themes related to holidays in the form of items, quests or bonuses. Some even design specific pets for the holiday.

Do you think holiday events are a great way to entertain users during the holidays?

Should pet sites give out extra quests rewards for the holidays as well?

My site celebrated April Fool's Day with a two-week-long event. The entire site got a new CSS theme with bright, whimsical colors, increased chances of random events with each page load, and a chance for players to receive arcade tokens through gameplay that could be traded for random prizes. A new pet species was added to the site for the first time in its history, which could only be obtained through the aforementioned random events. (I think I may have set the drop rate a little too high, though—many players ended the event with a dozen or more eggs in storage!)

(All species in the game hatch from egg items, whose names always consist of the word "egg" combined with an adjective. For example, the five species available at launch came from Small Eggs, Green Eggs, Blue Eggs, Red Eggs, and Yellow Eggs. The new species hatches from an item named "normal egg", which initially looks like a fried egg when it first hatches, but then a few days later a small face appears on the yolk. Many players were concerned about the fate of their new eggs at first, only to be relieved when they saw what they ended up growing into.)

That’s correct. I know Subeta also has a “Free Gift” feature where users can collect free items or points sometimes. They tend to load new rewards into that feature pretty often.

Marapets has something similar with a vault code system, you can collect free items and points, and they drop new codes every so often, usually during holidays or at random times. Santae has something too.

Rewards like that are a great incentive and help keep users engaged with the game longer. I also think it's smart to include them in random events or hidden areas of the game, kind of like “Easter eggs,” but with a twist. It keeps the game unpredictable in a fun way.
