New Horse Artwork Released!
We are thrilled to share that the new horse artwork update has now been released. The Adoption Centre is full of new horses, and all mares bred from today onward will have foals with the new artwork. Mares that were already pregnant before today will have old-style artwork foals, and all horses already in the game will keep their old artwork.
Early this morning we took the game offline to run the server at full-speed and pre-populate the adoption centre with nearly 3000 horses. That’s over 300 horses for each of the ancient breeds, and 150 each of the three breeds added from our community breeding program.
This artwork update has been a huge project we began over a year ago, and it has been a huge accomplishment to reach this point. Every single aspect of the horse artwork has been completely updated, including the rendering engine that draws the coats.
A Few Things Left to Finish
While we’ve done everything we can to get this update completed 100% before adding it to the game there are some things that we couldn’t quite finish in time. Mainly this is s few adjustments to the base model/mesh that were identified during late-stage testing. The throatlatch area on some of the heavier-type horses needs a bit of work, the attachment angle of the head to the neck on some horses, the tails position on foals and yearlings, and in some cases the bellies on pregnant mares all need a bit of work. The positioning of saddles on some horses may also get a bit of a review. I’m planning on making these adjustments by next week.
The other feature we weren’t able to fully finish in time is the expansion of face and leg white markings. The art for the faces is mostly done but needs a revision to better follow the contours of the face, but the leg markings haven’t been started just yet. Our plan is to complete these as soon as possible and get them added into the game New Colour Genetics
We have added in over 20 new genes related to coat colours.
♥ Colour Shades
“Red” and “Black” coat shades have been separated into their own genes so now it’s possible to combine the lightest red shades with the darkest black shades in a single coat.
A red modifier gene, which previously was only implemented in a coat when it had strong mealy effects, can now affect all coats no matter how much mealy is present. This modifier slight desaturates the coat and shifts the hue a bit towards yellow away from the strong red of most coats.
Dun now has a shade modifier to tint the dun effects from white to yellow.
Silver flaxen/mealy now has a shade modifier as well. The dapples, flaxen, and mealy effects in a silver coat can now be tinted from white to cream.
♥ New Dapples
Many new genes have been setup to handle the dapples, and dapples can now be caused my multiple different factors.
Sooty dapples can now be displayed in a small, condensed form in addition to the larger dapples we already have present.
Silver dapples can now display in varying areas over the coat instead of just covering the coat in full. The dapples are now also available in both the larger and smaller size similar to the sooty dapples.
New mealy dapples have been added. If a horse has mealy it may be capable of displaying dapples along the edges of the mealy effects. These dapples are also available in both the smaller and larger sizes.
New roan dapples have been added as well. These won’t appear in the adoption centre as you’ll have to find the right combination of crossbreeding to unlock the secret of the roan dapples.
♥ Silver Modifications
Silver has been modifier so allow for a variety of expression in the mealy-like effect on a silver black coat.
Silver fades throughout a horse’s life, and now a new gene has been added to modify the rate at which a silver coat might fade. Some horses will fade fast while other might fade slow, keeping their striking flaxen effects for longer.
♥ Suppression Genes
Two new genes have been added which can supress the effects of sooty and flaxen in a coat. This suppression has can be limited to just the body, or just the mane, or tail, or any combination of both. A chestnut horse with mild suppression of sooty on the body for example may present with only a little bit of sooty throughout the mane and tail.
♥ Mealy in Tails
While studying horse coats we noticed what looks like mealy extending into the edges of the tail. Genetically I don’t believe this is actually related to mealy. However, for the sake of programming the effect into the game it is connected to mealy. The visual effect itself can be separate from the visual effects of mealy on the body for additional variety in your horse’s coat.
♥ Fading Black
Black coats can now sometimes fade to mimic the effect of sun-faded coats seen in real life. There is variability in how the coat fades, and sometimes it’s only the mane or tail that fade.
♥ Dun and Non-dun1
Non-dun1 has been added to the game now, and it can sometimes cause a fading of the coat but never to the extreme as what is seen in a dun coat. Non-dun1 coats can sometimes even display primitive markings. Dun has a new primitive marking added in which widens and softens the edges of the dorsal strike creating somewhat of a fading on the back, similar to what we found in some real-life horse coats.
♥ Mane Frosting
Newly added in is the chance for a mane to display frosting. Dun coats will have the strongest display of frosting, but buckskin coats are also capable of displaying frosting as well.
♥ Coat Thickness on Muzzle
The thickness of a coat around the muzzle of a horse is now variable, with desert-type horses like Arabian and Turkmene having very thin coats showing a lot of skin, while heavier breeds and ponies have thicker coats showing much less skin on the muzzle and around the eyes.
♥ New Tiger Eye Gene
A second tiger eye gene has been added, one which can cause blue eyes to appear on a single-cream coat like a Palomino. This could make your very pale palominos look similar to a cremello for example, so you’ll have to pay close attention to the other effects, like skin colour, to determine if your horse is single or double cream.
♥ Expansion of Grey Transition Effects
11 of the greying genes have been modified to extend the duration of the grey transition in coats at various stage New Hair Genes
There are 6 new genes related to mane, tail, and feather growth. Most of them adjust the rate of growth for each of these, with two related to tail style and length. More notably is that manes and tails can now grow in length and thickness at individual rates, and maximum tail length can now be independent of maximum mane length.
Renderer Status
Since we opened the doors this morning and let everyone in to play with the updated horses, the renderer has been working non-stop to keep up. Currently there is between a 10 to 25 min backlog depending how many horses are being bred. This means from the moment you breed a horse it may take between 10 to 25 minutes before the coat is drawn. If your foal is born before the coat is fully drawn, you’ll see a placeholder image to represent your horse. This placeholder image may also appear from time to time as your horse reaches certain age stages which trigger the renderer to update the horse’s coat. We anticipate the renderer will be backlogged like this for a few days since everyone is so excited to be playing with the new artwork, but we’ll be keeping a close eye on things and have plans to expand the server if necessary to keep up.
New Conformation Shapes
In addition to updating the base model/mesh and each of the existing conformation shapes, we’ve added 6 new ones to add even more variety to your horses! These include 3 genes that modify the shape of a horse’s head, 1 gene to modify the ears to make them look like a Marwari’s ears, 1 gene to modify the “arch” of a horse’s neck, and lastly 1 gene to change how your horse prefers to position his hind leg stance.
Breed Conformation Setup
The conformation shapes for each breed in the adoption centre have been updated to better reflect what the breed should look like with the new horse model/mesh. Since conformation is closely tied to stats and performance you may notice changes in overall stats for some breeds. The actual stats behind the conformation have not changed though, only the conformation has changed. We will be reviewing the stats for each breed as part of our competition update, as we have a few new features we’re planning on that can enhance the stats and performance of your horses.
Updates to Weight Display
Along with the new art we have released a few other small updates related to displaying skinniness or fatness. Underweight/skinny horses and foals will now have a subtle layer showing their ribs, while normal or overweight horses won’t have this. To prevent all foals from being born underweight the foal will now inherit its initial weight from its mother. So, if a mare is under weight when the foal is born, the foal will also be underweight. But conversely if a mare is a good weight or overweight when the foal is born, the foal will have a larger weight size as well.
Future Artwork Expansions
This update, while huge, only includes the white patterns we already had existing in the game, tobiano, roan and the leopard complex. We have plans for adding in so many more white patterns in the future from splash, overo, sabino, dominant whites, and anything else we can find! What’s Coming Next?
Curious to know what we’re planning to work on once all the last pieces of the art update are done? We have many plans but first up will most likely be an expansion to all aspects of competition and local shows, with a few updates also to training.
I know everyone will be asking “when is genetic testing?’ and don’t worry that is high on our list too. When we have details on how we’re planning to implement this we’ll let you all know.
