How do you get designing ideas?

As a graphic designer, there is always the need to have a basis on which you run your designs. When it comes to designing, where are the places that you get ideas on what to design?

I would just look at different images until something good came to mind.

You can check online, you can think and even check other people's work. For me, I normally check other people's work and I also visit some sites that are good with designs and pick the one that is related to what I want to design. And that's how the ideas on what to do will flood in.

Checking online for designing ideas is good. There are a coupe of sites where one can get those ideas, and I agree that it is always the faster approach to make as well.

What I do is simply follow design blogs, attend webinars, and participate in design challenges. That's where I get my design ideas from.

To be honest, I copy a lot. While it's not an exact replica, I take pieces of X and Y to make Z, so it is original work, but it's heavily inspired by other's ideas.

Should I said I have no inspiration of my own? It's very hurtful that I can't just sit and think about what to design.
The only way I can design is by copying from others and getting it the way theirs look or it will have a little difference.

Being inspired by others is not common to you alone, I do it too, but creating your own ideas is the best for uniqueness. Sometimes I brainstorm or freewrite to come up with my own ideas.

You see that uniqueness, that's what I meant. It will be lovely to have your own ideas, great creativity coming from your brain too. That's what I want for myself and not to copy.

I get inspiration looking at ads on various lifestyle magazines, I also like to check design magazines such as Print or Design Week.
