How many pets should you be able to have?

I would say 2 - 3 pets would be ideal as a starter and then work up from there. Anymore than that and you may find that it's difficult to take care of them until you get into some kind of routine.

It's extremely necessary to also consider server load and gameplay balance and that's why I'd suggest a cap around 10-15 pets. Too many pets can be very overwhelming for new players.

You raised a very good point about server load. It's very necessary to also consider implementing a pet storage for players to store excess pets, which will allow freeing up active slots.

I think it depends on the type of pet game. If the game focuses on breeding and collecting, then a cap of 10-15 pets might feel too restrictive.

However, for more traditional pet sites like Neopets or Subeta, 10-15 pets could be sufficient, provided there’s an option for users to purchase or unlock additional pet slots if they want more. For example, Marapets recently increased its pet limit from 100 to 120, and Flight Rising allows users to start with 20 dragons but purchase extra slots for 20,000 treasure (points).

Offering flexibility is crucial. While a cap can help with gameplay balance and server performance, having a way for players to expand their pet collection is important, especially if the game features a wide variety of species. Many players enjoy collecting pets and should have the option to own as many as they’d like.

What do you think is the ideal balance between limits and player freedom in pet sites?
