How often should a new version of a game title be released?

Some video games always release newer versions every year. While some games do it every two years. How often do you think it should take for a game to roll out a new release?

I do not know what are the criteria for developers and studio for releasing the new version of the game, but I think releasing a new version every 4-5 years can be considered good.

Some game developers release new versions every year. I know for sure that football simulation games like FIFA, Football Manager and Pro Evolution Soccer release new versions every year. And they sell very well.

The frequency to which a game should be released depends on the type of game and the target audience. Some games like sports simulation might demand an annual release because of the frequent changes in such games. But for some it might take 4 to 5 years to release a new game.

@uptrendfinancialsignal You are absolutely right! The creation of new versions for a game depends on the genre of game and the game developer. There are games which are updated very frequently while some other games may have bigger intervals before the release of another version.

If it's something like CoD or Mario Kart is released, should be released once per console and just updated through its life. Other titles, I would say every few years.

Sequels that are released year after year like the sports games make sure fans have something new to experience but may seem to be more of an update Fighting games or story related games can take about 3-5 years as it lets the devs think and to make improvements.
