Kingdom Sky - Step right up, step right up, gotcha site improvements here!

Discussion in 'Virtual Pets News' started by Cup of Hot Cocoa, Jul 2, 2012.

  1. I know that some of you who have tried Kingdom Sky were a bit put off (or just concerned) because of the site lag, the usershop issues, and the seeming lack of restockables. However, a recent news post by Angel has cleared all of this up and in record time too.

    Site Update

Good Morning Everyone! I just wanted to update you all on some happenings behind the scenes.

First, I would like to thank Onyx the owner of Khimeros for becoming what could only be described as a mentor of awesomeness! She has graciously offered advice and what's more contacted one of her software engineers to help us. That is the user "Rook" several of you have asked me about. She is working on the recode as well as fixing some of the peskier bugs we have around.

On that note, I want to apologize to everyone for the lag and issues we've been having. Rest assured, they are being worked on and the major ones with the highest priority will be resolved today.

The user shops and the restock system have received a major makeover! Site shops will now restock consistently and more than one of an item depending on its rarity. You also, have to enter the price of the item now, so that it gives a fairer chance to multiple users to get an item they want. A quickstock feature has been added to user shops and something I hope will make your lives a littler autopricer! Please note that the autopricer will only be available until the recode is completed and Star Accounts are added.

As far as the lag goes there are several factors that were causing it, such as the merciless refreshing, and the abundance of point and click games and features we have. These will be looked into and adjusted so as not to much so much stress on the server and consume so much RAM.

Even though we are on a dedicated server, the RAM is not enough for the beastly needs of KS. So, I will be purchasing another server upgrade as soon as possible. This does NOT mean another transfer, so don't go screaming into the streets. hee,hee

It is also important that if you have ANY HC related issues you mail me immediately with the title being in caps so that I give priority to those mails first.
    So to recap:
    1. We now have an awesome programming team of 2.
    2. Join Khimeros if you haven't already because Onyx is amazing and has the most epic scrollbars in teh internetz.
    3. Awesome shop related features will be up today and shop, bank, and gallery bugs have been fixed.
    4. Massive refreshing will be controlled.
    5. Server will be upgraded.

Again, thank you so much for sticking it out with us! We are growing by leaps and bounds and it is all because of you! Thank you for believing in KS and making it a thiriving community!

So, there you have it. Any thoughts? I was seriously relieved and amazed at how fast they were tackling these issues!

  2. Re: Kingdom Sky - Usershops, restock, and overall site improvements!

You guys should make the news page accessible for guests as well.
  3. Re: Kingdom Sky - Usershops, restock, and overall site improvements!

I just volunteered to post the news, but that is a good idea. I'll try and mail it to Angel. :3
  4. I'm quite curious as to how much RAM their current dedicated server has though.

The autopricer is a cool feature to have. Makes life easier for users re-selling items.
  5. A recode already? What?
  6. cpvr

I'm not quite sure, I didn't ask. And yeah, a lot of us are regetting our shop legs so it's a nice convenience.

Not a total recode. More of a performance enhance and a bug squash.
  7. It's nice to see how fast they're updating things!
  8. There is, in fact, a full recode coming up.

First, all the bugs and glitches will be squashed so that normal game play can continue on the site for the moment (in fact, most have already been fixed).

Next, every feature will be gone over and discussed so that when the site is recoded, the code will be as efficient as possible. The recode will allow the site to be more scalable and optimized, and pave the way for the addition of new features.

  10. @GrotesqueGrotesque Lol. It's not my site. My next site (seraphel) will likely be coded in ruby.

  11. So, is your programmer doing the whole recode process?

  12. That's the plan, yes :)
  13. What did they do the last 18 months if they already need a whole recode? How long will it take for the recode?
  14. Unfortunately, Angel has spent the last 18 months being lied to and ripped off. Part of the reason I decided to step in and help as I can.

KS is definitely having to struggle to overcome some obstacles. That's nothing unusual though. To me, it's not running into obstacles that makes someone a bad or good site owner. It's being willing to learn from mistakes and being willing to do whatever it takes to correct the problems, that makes a good site owner. Angel is doing everything in her power to get the site up to snuff. I can't say exactly how long a recode will take, but the site will be playable in the meantime - the most egregious existing bugs and glitches have already been fixed up, and Wisu will continue to fix any additional problems that crop up until the recode is in place.
  15. It's good to see people from other sites give help like this.
  16. Are you doing this for free?
  17. @GrotesqueGrotesque the consultation/advice/planning stuff I'm doing for free, yes, but the programming, Angel is paying for. When I say "my programmer" I simply mean that she's the same programmer who I use, who I recommended to Angel because I know her to be good, fast, and reliable. She has a degree in software engineering.

  18. Ok, thanks for information. Yeah there is quite a quality difference (at least sometimes) between a hobby coder and a professional.
  19. It's a shame it's going to have to be recoded. That's why you should find a real programmer to do the job properly at the start.

When it's recoded will users have to register again and will there be a limit to how many users can join?
  20. @LewisLewis, nope you won't have to sign up again! The site is still fully playable while the recode is being done.

Unfortunately, when a person doesn't know anything about programming themselves, it's a real challenge to find a programmer who is as good as they say they are. It's kind of like taking your car to a mechanic - if you know nothing about cars then you have to rely on the mechanic to know what they are doing. You can try getting recommendations and references, but the fact that this is the internet makes it a lot harder. You can get 3 references and they can all turn out to be fake. Unfortunately Angel was paying very well for what she thought was good code, and it turned out to be... not so good code. But, it's a live and learn situation. I should also point out that there has been more than one programmer working on KS and I don't in any way mean to point a finger at any particular person because it was a case where there were some who gave MUCH better and more honest effort and had much greater skill than others... I will leave it at that.

What's happening right now is related to what was supposed to just be the installation of more RAM... I can't really say more than that at the moment, but it's being worked on.
