Development Update - February 2024

Feature Spotlight: Star Signs, Deep Dive: The Tempest, Winter 2024 Asset Reveal

Published 3/1/2024

Hi folks, Miyazaki checking in with our development update for the month of February 2024.

It was a tough month for the team: one of us moved, one of us had surgery, and three of us were laid out sick for a while. Everyone's stable and on the mend, though, and with some recovery under our belts we're looking forward to picking up the pace in March!

In spite of everything we've still got some new content to cover. Let's hop in!

large divider

Astrological Calendar

A starry sky featuring the twelve zodiac constellations.

The Mythauran calendar is divided into twelve months of roughly equal length. The earliest Beast species--Dragons, Unicorns, and Griffins--have each left their cultural markers on the Mythauran calendar.

Dragons, being the first species to develop a written language (and one that's rather flowery and verbose), were the first to give names to each of the months of the year. These names were meant to conjure images, feelings, and sensations associated with the different times of the year.

Unicorn culture, being nomadic for a significant part of the year as they chase the path of storms on the Southern Plains, used the position of constellations in the sky to guide their paths. These were named after significant cultural figures both fictional and real, who featured prominently in their rich verbal storytelling tradition.

Griffins were the first to master the craft of creating palm stones, which have been used for centuries to manipulate a Beast's secondary Element prior to birth. The Element associated with each stone came from Griffin astronomers, who picked a stone that best symbolized the constellation that spent the most time over their capital city for the month.

March

The Tempest: a Unicorn with lightning crackling around its horn. A labradorite palmstone with this constellation is in the foreground.

The month of March is referred to as Chasm's Roar in Dragon culture, representing the peals of thunder ringing through the canyons in the Spine of Ere. This month is also associated with the constellation of the Tempest and the labradorite stone.

Mythauran astrologers say those born under the sign of the Tempest are strong-willed, decisive individuals who believe strongly in their own moral code. Their well-defined sense of self makes them capable leaders, whose confidence inspires those who look to them for guidance.

At their best, Tempests are inspiring, self-assured, and magnanimous. At their worst, they can be belligerent, intolerant of others' beliefs, and arrogant.

Rogue Class Companion Winner

A Dire Corvus, a three-headed corvid with glowing white eyes and starry wing feathers.

What's better than two pairs of eyes to help you keep watch? Three pairs of eyes! The Dire Corvus will be the starting Companion for the Rogue Class. Thanks to all who voted in the Ko-fi poll to help decide the winner!

We'll be back in a near update with more information on our final starter Class; with that comes voting for its Companion and starter Gear as well. Keep your eyes peeled!

large divider

Mythaura v0.x

While there are no new feature releases this month, Koa and Sark have been hard at work on the player menu, specifically the party screen and the way a player's Beasts are housed. There's also been a lot of work put toward a prototype of the interactive world map--and that's for both the world overall and the starter town of Talon's Rest that players will find themselves in when the game launches!

Thank You!

Thanks for sticking through to the end of the post, we always look forward to sharing our month's work with all of you--thank you for taking the time to read. We'll see you around the Discord!

DEVELOPMENT UPDATE - APRIL 2024 from the Mythaura team is now here!

THE JEWELER STARSIGN, TOWN EXPLORATION PREVIEW, SORCERER COMPANION: PROTOCHIMERA
BlN892lZLI4MiMEOJVsmZeiew5CZc43e71eDeyci.png

Hello folks! 2024 keeps plugging along and so does the dev team behind the scenes over on our side. We're excited to share a few proof of concept videos with you all, demonstrating some of the tech that we're developing to make the game that you will eventually be playing. We're able to move characters around in a 3D space and render in large objects like houses--the first steps toward rendering other elements in this world, too.

We also have the winners for the Spring Quarter rewards on Ko-fi, the Sorcerer class companion, and an overview of Mythauran astrology for the month of May.

large banner

TECH DEMO: MAPS & WEATHER

Your lead Beast will be able to move around the map in 3D--this is how they will navigate both towns/settlements as well as the Wild Area. From the overworld, they can engage with the environment and NPCs. There will be plenty of things to discover for those who choose to explore the world of Mythaura in detail.

Not only will buildings be rendered in 3D, but the world will also have dynamic weather and lighting effects. These different elements can impact several different gameplay features: frequency of encountering certain Companions, items found in the Wild Area, and more. You may even find that some NPCs have preferences for certain kinds of weather or times of day!

Please note that weather effects are currently planned as a post-launch item and may not be implemented on initial launch.

MYTHAURAN ASTROLOGY: MAY

The constellation of the Jeweler, a Harpy polishing a crown it is holding in its hand. A boulder opal stone with the constellation of the Jeweler is in the upper-right corner.

The month of May is referred to as Monolith's Rise, representing the unshakable bonds of unity among the Dragon clans. This month is also associated with the constellation of the Jeweler and the boulder opal stone.

Those born under the sign of the Jeweler are meticulous, detail-oriented individuals. They hold themselves to high standards and strive for perfection in all elements of their lives--especially regarding activities and interests that they love.

At their best, Jewelers are patient, inquisitive, and methodical. At their worst, they can be pedantic, judgmental, and overly critical.

KO-FI SPRING QUARTER 2024 WINNERS

Thank you to all the Ko-fi sponsors who voted for the Spring Quarter 2024 rewards. Next month we will show the finalized artwork for the Gossamer Campanula Companion and the Chinoiserie Quetzal Glamour. Stay tuned!

large banner

SORCERER CLASS COMPANION WINNER

The Protochimera; it has an owl-like face, mammalian body, avian front legs, reptilian tail, and leathery wings.

This lovingly cobbled-together Protochimera will be by your Sorcerer's side from the very first step on your journey together. Being born from alchemical experimentation themselves, these are curious, clever creatures whose various furs, feathers, and scales can be used in the crafting of magical concoctions.

The Protochimera rounds out all the Starter Companions that can accompany your Beast on their journey through Mythaura. We're excited to see the characters that you make and the Companions that they choose to bring along with them.

DEVELOPMENT UPDATE - MAY 2024

THE PRODIGY STARSIGN, NEW SPECIAL: BANDING, UNICORN EXPRESSIONS, SPRING 2024 REVEAL
A blue and green adult Unicorn. The Development Update topics read: The Prodigy Starsign, New Special: Banding, Unicorn Expressions, and Spring 2024 Reveal.

Hi folks, Miyazaki here with our development updates for the month of May. Our backend development continues to plug along incredibly well: Koa and Sark introduced several new key functionalities, including the implementation of our New Game+ system(and all the mechanics that entails), leveling algorithms, and skill trees that will allow you to choose the moves that your beasts bring with them into battle.

We've also got the results of the Winter 2024 Ko-fi rewards, the June astrology overview, the announcement of our second ever Custom Color Contest, and more. Read on to find out more!

Large banner

NEW SPECIAL: BANDING

Bold stripes and flecks mark the hide of Beasts sporting our newest Special, Banding. We'd love to see what creations you come up with in our Beast Creator, and look forward to sharing something Banding-related in a near-future update...

A young Unicorn. It is deep red with white bands and flecks.
An adult Kirin. It is brown-blue with greyish bands and flecks.
An adult Griffin. It is brown and orange with red bands and flecks.

Large banner

TONGUE COLOR UPDATE & UNICORN EXPRESSIONS

An adult Ryu; it is pearly white with light blue hair and tendrils. A young Basilisk; it is purple and green with a white belly and legs.

Some of you may have noticed a change to the Basilisks in the Beast Creator—their tongues now have blue tongues with a gradient, like some real-life skinks and snakes.

There are certain colors on the color wheel that will impact the mouth and tongue color of all Beasts. This was driven by us creating lots (and lots...and lots and lots) of different Beasts as we test various backend elements and realizing that some colors didn't look quite right with normal mouth coloration.

This is demonstrated below on the young Unicorn, whose base color is Patina. We're excited to be able to show you all the finished Unicorn expressions—huge shoutout to Luci, Kymara, and Koa for knocking all of these out. Expressions are a huge undertaking for the team, but we really feel like the end result when playing the game will absolutely make all the work worth it. 🙂

An adult Unicorn and a young Unicorn. The adult is deep blue with orange and light blue mane and tail. The young Unicorn is a tarnished brown with bright green bands and flecks. Various emotions are displayed on headshots below.

SPRING 2024 REWARDS REVEAL

Our Spring 2024 rewards have been completed and are ready for their public debut! Thank you to the Ko-fi Sponsors who voted on the different Glamour and Companion concepts, we appreciate your support and feedback.

Spring 2024 Glamour: Chinoiserie

An adult Quetzal; it is white and painted with cobalt blue chinoiserie-style flowers and lines.

Small banner

Spring 2024 Companion: Gossamer Campanula

A floral jellyfish. Its head is a pink flower and its tendrils are grassy and dotted with blossoms.

Small banner

Spring 2024 Solid Gold Glamour: Young Unicorn

A young Unicorn; it is solid, glittering gold.

Large banner

MYTHAURAN ASTROLOGY: JUNE

The starsign of the Prodigy; it is an adult Dragon intently focused on a cipher in its claws. The birthstone is a shiny purple stone with the Prodigy's starsign etched into its face.

The month of June is referred to as Darksun's Dominion in Dragon culture, representing the month with the most sunlight in the far north of the continent—one that still finds the sun eclipsed by the moon most days. This month is also associated with the constellation of the Prodigy and the fluorite stone.

Mythauran astrologers say those born under the sign of the Prodigy are born with a powerful blend of ambition and charisma, visionaries who leave an indelible mark on the cosmic canvas with their grand aspirations and magnetic presence.

At their best, Prodigies are dynamic, confident, and insightful. At their worst, they can be overly bombastic, condescending, and pompous.

Mythaura’s latest DEVELOPMENT UPDATE is now here! - JUNE 2024

FEATURE SPOTLIGHT: ELITE ENEMIES, THE MAGISTRATE STARSIGN, SUMMER 2024 CONCEPTS
A Prismatic Inkmink, a rainbow mink with large feathery wings and covered with pangolin-like scales. Below that: Feature Spotlight: Elite Enemies. The Magistrate Starsign. Summer 2024 Concepts.

Hello everyone! Our June development wraps up the first half of 2024, and we're cruising along with work on some pretty substantial gameplay features. We're excited to discuss one of them today: Elite Enemies, who will pose a greater challenge to your Beasts--and those who defeat them will find themselves with greater rewards because of it, too.

We also discuss some other strategic gameplay elements, reveal the Summer 2024 quarterly Ko-fi rewards, show off some beautiful new sponsored content, and more!

Large banner

ELITE ENEMIES

A team of Beasts fighting a Pyrohoof Doe with the Quick modifier

During your adventure in wild areas, you may encounter Elite Enemies. These foes resemble their regular counterparts but boast more health, are 20% larger, and possess special modifying keywords like "Shielded," "Quick," or "Armored." For example, a Quick Armored Breezetail would have increased speed and have armor when encountered. The keywords are assigned randomly, and as the difficulty of the wild area scales, the number of keywords an Elite Enemy can have increases. Notably, when an Elite Enemy is tamed into a companion, it retains its increased size. Elite enemies also have an increased chance of spawning as its Radiant coloration.

Temporary Health

Certain moves in battle can grant temporary health. This temporary health is consumed first before any damage impacts the battler's actual health, offering an additional layer of protection during combat.

Shield & Armor

Some moves can grant a Shield in battle, which absorbs Projection type damage and must be depleted before health is affected. However, Combat damage bypasses the Shield and impacts health directly. Conversely, Armor absorbs Combat damage, while Projection damage bypasses the Armor and impacts health directly. This distinction between Shield and Armor introduces strategic depth, allowing players to tailor their defenses based on the type of incoming damage.

SUMMER QUARTER (2024) CONCEPTS

Cloud Hopper: an artic fox made out of flowing clouds; Ancient Defender: a stone Griffin with veins of blue energy crackling across its body; Venomous Stalker: a stout, green mammalian body covered with brown jaguar spots, a long serpentine tail, and a cobra head; Restored Messenger: a faceless circle with four feathery wings, surrounded by glowing golden bands.

Cloud Hopper Hippogriff: an adult Hippogriff covered in streaky clouds; Corona Dragon: a dark adult Dragon with gleaming golden outlines, like an eclipse; Rubberhose Ryu: a bright yellow and orange adult Ryu with the exaggerated features of a Rubberhose cartoon; Summer Lily Quetzal: an adult Quetzal with orange, red, and yellow markings similar to a summer lily, with green accents.

MYTHAURAN ASTROLOGY: JULY

A constellation of a large phoenix with a crown on its head and a black-and-tan pyrite stone with this constellation engraved upon it.

The month of July is referred to as Frostcrown's Flame in Dragon culture, representing the first month where the sunlight begins to wane--calling upon the legend that when the first Dragons almost froze to death in the Spine of Ere, a massive Frostcrown Phoenix led them to a volcanic cave, thereby saving their lives. This month is associated with the constellation of the Magistrate and the pyrite stone.

Those born under the sign of the Magistrate are known for their unwavering commitment (to themselves, their jobs, their cause, their loved ones) and a tireless work ethic. Like a dedicated ruler presiding over their kingdom, individuals influenced by the Magistrate take on responsibilities with a sense of duty and precision.

At their best, Magistrates are diligent, organized, and dutiful. At their worst, they can be defensive, uncooperative, and prone to indignation.

Mythaura’s latest development update has been released.

We're very excited to share a 3-minute video demo of some gameplay and UI!!

Hopefully you enjoy this brief demonstration of lots of features we've been working on. We'll go into more detail on each feature below!

Please note that these are WIP and not necessarily representative of final gameplay.

Small banner

New Game Screen

Screen

Whether you're starting your first, second, or third playthrough of Mythaura's storyline, you will always begin at the starter screen, where you will be able to customize your starter Beast. Each run you will pick:

  • Base, Top, Bottom, and Eye colors
  • Up to 3 Special markings ( up to 1 in first playthrough, 2 in second, 3 in third)
  • Species (Tier 1 in first playthrough, Tier 2 in second, Tier 3 in third)
  • Class
  • Birth element
A Beast's Element and Class will impact its stat distribution, with each one modifying one of a Beast's stats--improving Speed, Hit Points, Attack, Defense, Barrier, or Focus. Additionally, players will have a certain amount of skill points to allocate as they would like to their Beasts' stats. Whether you're opting for more of a roleplay focus or trying to build a more "optimized" build, the character creation system allows players to create the exact Beast that they would like.

New Game +3 and onward will not feature the character creation screen. Instead, players choosing to play through additional times will gain access to a different reward pool. Please stay tuned for that in a future update!

Small banner

PARTY SCREEN/CODEX

The party screen, showing Beasts, Items, Cipher, Map, Codex, and Shop. The headshots of the three party Beasts are in the lower-left corner. A blue and yellow adult Griffin is showcased as the party leader.
A book called the Codex, which functions as the player's main hub for all gameplay elements. The page is open on a Breezetail, a feathered rodent Companion. The other page features the icons of other Companions.

The party screen will functionally act as the player's home screen. From here, you can check out the Beasts in both your party and Abode, your inventory, the Codex, and more. Your Beast's stats will also show up on the right-hand side of the screen.

The Codex houses pretty much all a player's in-game information. Active and completed (and maybe failed...) quests, player achievements, lore gathered from around the world, and info on all the characters, places, and enemies you encounter in Mythaura are all documented in the Codex.

The base Codex will be a simple, elegant book. Different Codex themes can be earned through various quests, achievements, seasonal rewards, both in-game and premium currency purchase, and other opportunities.

Small banner

NPC DIALOGUE

Headshot of Terragon, a large blue and yellow Dragon. He is remarking on the appearance of the player's Beast.

There will be many, many NPCs in Mythaura. Some may not have much to say--a stranger you cross paths with at an open-air market, a merchant's busy apprentice, a parent at a park with their children--but some NPCs have full, fleshed-out storylines of their own. Maybe your character would prefer to keep mostly to themselves, but you will find that engaging with NPCs will uncover information about the world, rumors about other characters, quests, gifts, and more.

Small banner

SKILL TREE SCREEN

The skill tree screen. It is on a blue, red, and yellow cosmic background and features three constellations: the Stargazer, the Chariot, and the Sorcerer.

Skill Trees will determine the abilities and moves that a Beast can utilize in battle. Each Beast will have either two or three different Skill Trees that they can invest in, dependent upon their Elements and their Class. Beasts who have the same Element twice--when its species Element matches up with its birth Element--a Beast will have access to a Mastery Tree, which will feature a branch that borrows from other thematically relevant Elements, demonstrating the Beast's complete mastery of their Element.

If a Beast with a Mastery Tree changes to a Species that would give it two separate Elements, all Elements-related Skill Points will be reset in order for the player to reallocate them between the two new trees. The same applies for Beasts that change their Class.

Large banner

MYTHAURAN ASTROLOGY: AUGUST

A constellation of a Griffin in a mourning cowl, hands clasped in prayer--the sign of the Widow. A purple Lepidolite stone bears this constellation's stars.

The month of August is referred to as Ghostlight's Pall, representing a pale, ghostly green aurora that stretches across the Northern sky at this time each year--supposedly attributed to the souls stranded by a war that came to a decisive, bloody, and treacherous end during an August many, many lifetimes ago. This month is also associated with the constellation of the Widow and the lepidolitestone.

Those born under the sign of the Widow are resilient, compassionate, enigmatic individuals. There may not be a sign more dedicated to self-discovery and growth. They radiate a quiet strength and boundless compassion that uplifts those fortunate enough to share their journey.

At their best, Widows are soothing, magnanimous, and generous. At their worst, they can be withdrawn, excessively melancholy, and reproachful.

Mythaura’s newest development has been released. This update contains information regarding their Loot Pool functions.

Development Update - August 2024

Loot Pools Technical Overview, Color Contest Winner, The Chariot Star Sign, Introducing: Sour

Published 9/1/2024

A Red Imp; it carries a patched brown satchel on its back. Beneath that: Loot Pools Technical Overview, Color Contest Winner, The Chariot STar Sign, Introducing: Sour

Hi folks, hope you're enjoying your weekend so far! I know many of us on the Mythaura team are grateful for the holiday break here in the US, we're hoping that you're enjoying your weekend as well.

Today's technical feature will be Loot Pools, which is the system that determines which items you will get out of encounters in the Wild Area. We'll also cover the Summer 2024 Ko-fi Rewards, the Color Contest winner, Mythauran astrology for the month of September, and extend a welcome to our newest team member, Sourdeer!

Loot Pools

What are Loot Pools?

Loot Pools are the engine behind every instance of randomized loot generation in Mythaura. Whenever you obtain items or currency from an activity, such as completing a quest, opening a chest, or defeating a boss, it’s powered by a loot pool. These pools can be used in multiple scenarios and are highly configurable, with options like radiant chance overrides, item rarity overrides, and more. Each loot pool is defined by a minimum and maximum range, ensuring a balanced and fair distribution of rewards.

Dynamic Influences on Loot Pools

The items you equip in the game can influence the outcome of loot pools. For example, if you have a companion that boosts the amount of currency you receive, this will directly affect your loot drops, adding another layer of strategy to how you approach encounters and quests.

What Loot Pools Don’t Affect

It’s important to note that Loot Pools do not influence the companion tame mechanic. Taming a companion at the end of a successful encounter is governed by a different system, which uses separate buffs to improve your chances. For instance, while one buff might increase the likelihood of finding rare items, another will improve your chances of taming companions.

Thank You!

Thanks for sticking through to the end of the post, we always look forward to sharing our month's work with all of you--thank you for taking the time to read. We'll see you around the discord!

Mythaura’s latest development update for September has been released. This dev update contain updates regarding their inventory system.

Hello folks! Miyazaki checking in with our development updates for the month of September. Between getting our newest art team member onboarded, cooking up some really exciting Fall Quarter concept art, a new color, and a new Mutation, it's been a really creative month for us.

Koa and Sark are hard at work on the back end, creating the systems that power the game. We've got functioning inventories, and Koa was able to have a Beast successfully use a healing potion in the Wild Area! I'm making headway on our intro quest, working in tandem with the art team to create assets to bring our very first area to life.

All in all: some solid progress this month!

INVENTORY SYSTEM

An inventory in a grid-based system. It is filled with vials of potions, torches, lockpicks, food, and stones.
An adult black and red Dragon out in a forested Wild Area with a pond. The hotbar with access to six items is at the bottom of the screen.

This month, we focused on refining Mythaura’s inventory system, with special attention on making starting items function as expected. One of the most exciting additions is the Satchel feature. The satchel begins with 18 slots and can be expanded using non-premium currency, allowing for plenty of space to bring essentials on your adventures.

When preparing to explore, only provisions can be transferred from your stash to the satchel, but along the way, you’ll be able to pick up and store all types of loot. Additionally, the first row of your satchel is now displayed as a hotbar while exploring, enabling quick use of items like the Godspeed Potion, which boosts your movement speed, or a Torch to light your way in the dark.

However, be cautious—if you’re defeated while exploring, you’ll drop your satchel, leaving your items behind. You’ll need to return to the floor you were defeated on to recover it. If you’re defeated again before retrieving your original satchel, those items will be lost for good.

CUSTOM COLOR CONTEST WINNER

In another round of incredible color concepts pitched to our team, we came away with an exciting new color, courtesy of user Noxith: Canyon!

Their reference images were canyons with a beautiful gradient of reds and oranges, along with other geographical features of the American Southwest, such as mesas.

Canyon adds a wonderful richness to the Mythauran color wheel. We encourage you to share your Canyon creations made in the Beast Creator with us!

NEW MUTATION: CELESTIAL

Examples of the newest mutation, Celestial, which features glowing stars and constellations both on and around the body. It features an adult Hippogriff, adult Unicorn, and adult Quetzal.

Astrology plays no small part in Mythauran culture, so perhaps it's not such a surprise that the genes of some Beasts born in Mythaura are mutated to show a map of brightly glowing constellations around their bodies.

As a reminder, mutations are not Specials that can be applied via item. Instead, a Beast can rarely be born with a Mutation or they can rarely be obtained via a late-game boss encounter.

The month of October is referred to as Greenbright's Close, representing the official beginning of autumn and the winding down of greenery as foliage turns gold and red. This month is also associated with the constellation of the Physician and the malachite stone.

Hi folks, Miyazaki here bringing you an update for Mythaura's development for the month of October! We've got some species change mechanics, super cute expressions for Hippogriffs, a rich new color for your beast creations, the Ko-fi results for the Fall Quarter Ko-fi Rewards, and some astrology.

Additionally: Koa, Sark, and I have been verybusy the past month scoping out the remainder of the work that needs to be done in order to support Mythaura's initial launch. We're building in plenty of buffer to account for any unforeseen work that will need doing as well as any issues that may crop up.

We're really buckling down to get Mythaura to a point where we can bring in our Beta testers and get this game into a playable state. We've come a long way in our development journey and are so thankful to have had you all along for the ride.

CHANGING SPECIES: SOULSHIFT COINS

A bronze coin with the head of a Griffin; a silver coin with the head of a Quetzal; a gold coin with the head of a Peryton

One of our biggest goals with Mythaura is to grant users the ability to customize their Beasts to be exactly what you want them to be. To that end, we've created our species-changing items: Soulshift Coins.

Small banner

Functionality

There will be one coin for each species; Tier 1 Beasts (Griffins, Unicorns, Dragons) will have bronze coins, Tier 2 Beasts (Quetzals, Kirins, and Hippogriffs) will have silver coins, and Tier 3 Beasts (Ryus, Perytons, and Basilisks) will have gold coins. We are also planning to have a Jade Soulshift Coin, which would randomize the species of the Beast that it is used on.

These single-use items will change a Beast's species, so long as they are not in a Wild Area or in battle. They can be used on both young and adult Beasts. They can also be used on expecting Beasts, but will not impact the species of the unborn offspring.

Immediately upon use, the Beast will have their secondary Element changed to match the new species (if applicable). All Skill Tree points are reset and all equipped glamours and apparel not supported by the new species will automatically be uneqipped and sent back to the player's inventory.

Small banner

Acquisition

All Soulshift Coins will be obtainable with in-game currency. Access to the different tiers will be tied to the New Game cycle that the player is in:

  • Players in the base New Game will be able to purchase Soulshift Coins for the Tier 1 species
  • Players in New Game+ will be able to purchase Soulshift Coins for Tier 1 and Tier 2 species
  • Players in New Game+2 and beyond will be able to purchase Soulshift Coins for Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 species
Tier 2 and Tier 3 Soulshift Coins will also be available through other gameplay means, like Seasonal rewards and the Weekend Traveler's inventory. Soulshift Coins that show up in the Weekend Traveler's inventory may end up being purchased with premium currency. We're still figuring out the details there, but rest assured that there will be multiple ways for players to acquire these species-changing items!

NEW EXPRESSIONS: HIPPOGRIFFS

Expressions of a young Hippogriff and an adult Hippogriff.

Koa and our talented art team have wrapped up drawing each of our available Specials, Supers, and Mutations on the expressions for both the young and adult Hippogriffs. These headshots will appear whenever a Hippogriff shows up in dialogue.

NEW COLOR: PORPHYRY

An adult Kirin, Basilisk, and Quetzal demonstrating uses of the new color Porphyry

Named for the igneous rocks that they resemble, our color wheel's newest addition, Porphyry, is a rich red-brown with purple highlights. We encourage you to play around in the Beast Creator to come up with some fun new Beast designs!

2024 YEAR IN REVIEW

Creative

This year, the creative team worked on adding new features, introducing imaginative designs, and refining lore/worldbuilding to enrich the overall experience.

  • New Beasts and Expressions: All 9 beast expression bases completed for both young and adult with finalized specials for Dragons, Unicorns, Griffins, Hippogriffs, and Ryu.
  • Mutations, Supers and Specials:Introduced the Celestial mutation as well as new Specials Banding & Merle, and the Super Prismatic.
  • New Artist: Welcomed Sourdeer to the creative team.
  • Collaboration and Sponsorship:Sponsored several new companions from our Ko-Fi sponsors—Amaru, Inkminks, Somnowl, Torchlight Python, Belligerent Capygora, and the Fruit-Footeded Gecko.
  • New Colors: Revealed two eye-catching colors, Canyon (a contest winner) and Porphyry (a surprise bonus), giving players even more variety for their Beasts.
  • Classes and Gear: Unveiled distinct classes, each with its own themed equipment and companions, to provide deeper roleplay and strategic depth.
  • Items and Worldbuilding: Created a range of new items—from soulshift coins to potions, rations, and over a dozen fishable species—enriching Mythaura’s economy and interactions.
  • Star Signs & Astrology: Continued to elaborate on the zodiac-like system, connecting each Beast’s fate to celestial alignments.
  • Questing & Story Outline: Laid the groundwork for the intro quest pipeline and overarching narrative, ensuring that players’ journey unfolds with purposeful progression.
Small banner

Code

This year, the development team worked diligently on refining and expanding the codebase to support new features, enhance performance, and improve gameplay experiences. A total 429,000 lines of code changed across both the backend and frontend, reflecting:

  • New Features: Implementation of systems like skill trees, inventory management, community forums, elite enemies, npc & quest systems, and advanced customization options for Beasts.
  • Optimizations and Refactoring:Significant cleanup and streamlining of backend systems, such as game state management, passive effects, damage algorithms, and map data structures, ensuring better performance and maintainability.
  • Map Builder: a tool that allows us to build bespoke maps
  • Regular updates to ensure compatibility with modern tools and frameworks.
It’s worth noting that line changes alone don’t capture the complexity of programming work. For example:

  • A single line of efficient code can replace multiple lines of legacy logic.
  • Optimizing backend systems often involves removing redundant or outdated code without adding new functionality.
  • Things like added dependencies can add many lines of code without adding much bespoke functionality.

THANK YOU!

Thanks for sticking through to the end of the post, we always look forward to sharing our month's work with all of you--thank you for taking the time to read. We'll see you around the Discord.

Mythaura’s latest development update is now available. This update contains news regarding the following:
TALON'S REST & NPC DESIGN CONTEST, SPONSORED COLOR: FLYTRAP, QUETZAL EXPRESSIONS, THE STARGAZER STARSIGN.

Hi there everyone, welcome to the January development update for Mythaura! 2025 got off to a strong start: art and writing for the content needed for launch are already well underway and have been scoped out in detail for our team to measure ourselves against, and as you'll see below, Koa and Sark knocked out a TON of work that is making Mythaura into an immersive world that you will eventually be able to play within!

We've got a lot of ground to cover today. We've been keeping fairly quiet on in-universe lore and worldbuilding, but plan on sharing more content about it with you all over the course of 2025. Today's update will focus on the city of Talon's Rest, which is where the player will find themselves at the very beginning of their journey through Mythaura.

We're opening up our first Beast Creator Contest of 2025 as well! We'll be picking three winners, whose characters will be turned into a minor NPC in town. We also have the results from the Ko-fi Winter Quarter rewards voting, Mythauran astrology for the month of February, a beautiful new color for the color wheel, Quetzal expressions, and more!

TALON'S REST

Players will begin their journey in the burgeoning city of Talon's Rest, a garrison-turned-city built around a Cipher Pedestal. The Long War, which carried on ceaselessly for over a century, took almost as long to properly recover from. As formal trade routes began to follow the newly-built cross-continental roads, Talon's Rest found itself in a unique position: they were the biggest city in range of the Arena, a popular destination since Atticus commissioned its restoration at the end of the war. It has become the de facto stopping point for the crowds traveling to the Arena.

Talon's Rest has put the money toward the beautification of its city's public places and the sposorship of artists, scientists, and mathemeticians, but is still grappling with the growing pains associated with a social infrastructure that's not built to support this many people all at one time. Residents have mixed feelings about the influx of new businesses, the changing economy, and the cultural identity of Talon's Rest. Many are willing to air these grievances and sing these praises with whoever will listen to them.

Setting

Talon's Rest is situated at the edge of a north-facing cliff that overlooks both Lake Kali and the dense, dark expanse of the Waspwood. It is situated in an agriculturally rich fieldlands broadly referred to as Wind's End, as it is one of the nothernmost stretches of Griffin territory. The monolithic Arena crowns a dormant volcano off to the northeast.

It sits well above sea level, but not quite alpine. The region is located at the foot of a mountain range and enjoys snowpack melt that replenishes streams and the lake with clean, drinkable water. During the summer, it gets dry and the forests around the town can be prone to forest fires as a natural part of the forest lifecycle.

It experiences all four seasons, with warm, dry summers and cold, snowy winters.

History

A Cipher Pedestal, a stone pillar with a glowing blue center
The history of Talon's Rest is the history of the Cipher Pedestal that the town was built around. Cipher Pedestals far predate modern Mythauran history and allow Cipher Bearers to empower and manipulate their Ciphers. For all of recorded history, control over Cipher Pedestals has been the cause of the longest, most costly, and most lethal wars all across the continent, but none more so than the Griffin inter-drift civil wars collectively referred to as the Long War.

Talon's Rest is, all things considered, a young city, built around the Pedestal situated at the highest point of the cliff. The first permanent building erected around the pedestal was a garrison used to house the troops of a prominent drift, who'd managed to secure access to the Pedestal and leverage their significant number of Cipher Bearers to ensure that the only Pedestal in the surrounding region stayed under their control. With the surrounding area primarily subsisting of farms with miles and miles between them, they faced little resistance and enjoyed control over the Pedestal for almost twenty years.

Atticus's campaign to unite all Griffin drifts under one banner (known as the Reformation) and regulate Cipher Pedestal usage saw one of its greatest victories take place at this garrison. Atticus, having wielded a powerful military of his own prior to being forced to act in this civil war, had amassed one of the largest single militaries ever organized in Griffin history. The Battle for Talon's Rest was brutal but decisive: the family that had manned the garrison for decades was rendered extinct, and the fort itself was aspirationally renamed as Talon's Rest. Historians consider this the final turning point for the War, where Atticus's success in uniting the Drifts was all but inevitable.

Economy

Talon's Rest was populated by Beasts who worked the farmlands surrounding it; agriculture has been the primary driver of the economy since the very beginning and still serves as the largest revenue stream for the city. Local farmers hybridized different kinds of wheat until they yielded a soft, sweet white crop--the chaff goes to their livestock and the grain is milled into flour to make one of their main exports. It's famed across the continent for its mild and slightly nutty flavor.

The city's position as a natural pausing point for those traveling to the Arena has meant that more taverns, inns, and other lodgings have cropped up. As it became known as a hub for the area, mercenaries and adventurers flocked to Talon's Rest find work, paying a fee in exchange for being able to audition themselves for work in town. There is never a shortage of Beasts showing up to the Recruiter's tavern, ensuring a steady selection of new Beasts for your adventuring roster.

A prevalence of copper mines in the area means that it is the most commonly used metal in architecture, art, and machinery. A rich blue-green pigment, created from ground-up copper patina, is another popular export. Artisans and masons often infuse this pigment into their work, which is why the facade of the highly-regarded medical university in the middle of the city was made using blue-green bricks with copper accents. This pigment fetches a fair price for regions without ready access to copper mines.

SOCIAL MEDIA REFRESH

We've created a few new social media accounts, standardized the names across the different platforms, and will be posting content more regularly to each of these beyond just our monthly update! We can't think of a character better suited to be the face of Mythaura than Pollis (he/him), an elderly Quetzal merchant and one of the first NPCs you'll run into on your journey through Mythaura.

A headshot of Pollis, an elderly orange Quetzal

Next month we will be running a giveaway on Instagram. In the February update, we'll be doing a deeper dive into Wolfwasps, an enemy so powerful and pervasive that the forest around Talon's Rest is named after it: the Waspwood. We'll have some rather radiant items to give away to some lucky contestants. ✨🐺

Mythaura’s latest dev report has been released. This new update contains update regarding various site features! It is one Mythaura’s biggest development updates thus far!

Hello everyone! Miyazaki here with February's development update for Mythaura. We covered a lot of ground this month—it is probably the single biggest month for us in terms of development. We're excited to tell you about some of the things that we've finished up and look forward to sharing even more features with you in the future.

Note: Last month we'd said that we'd be posting about Wolfwasps...that's postponed until next month. We will be posting Wolfwasp lore as well as hosting a ✨radiant✨ giveaway.

CO-OP DEMO

Players will be able to explore the world of Mythaura—both overworld locations like Talon's Rest as well as the procedurally generated Wild Areas—in groups of up to three players. If there are only two players, you can add an additional Beast to the party lineup.

  • Players can no longer be added to a Party if they cannot access the Party Leader’s location (e.g., if the area is not yet unlocked in their game).
  • When a player joins a Party, they will automatically move to the Party Leader’s location. Any location change must be agreed upon by all Party members.
  • By default, only friends can invite you to a group. However, we are exploring options for players who may want to allow invites more freely or block them entirely.
  • If a player disconnects, they can freely reconnect and will be placed back in the same location.

FORUMS

The Forums are the heartbeat of Mythaura's social scene. Whether you're looking to share your most recent PVP builds, recruit people to join your adventuring party in the Waspwood, or talk about how excited you are for Patch 8 of BG3 to come out (not that anyone's excitedly waiting for that, of course), the Forums will have a place to house your discussion.

Mythaura's Forums feature a Reddit-style posting system, with the ability to create nested replies.

Forums will feature:

  • Trending threads: What are the most popular recent threads? This feature will showcase threads that are receiving the most engagement at the time.
  • Tags: Players will have the ability to tag their content, helping other players find and sort through relevant content.
  • Thread following: Keep updated on threads that caught your interest. We know you're waiting for your favorite artist to release the baby Basilisk Glamour they've been teasing for a while.
  • Markdown styling to customize your posts exactly how you'd like them

Bug Bounties

The Bug Report Forum. It has several threads detailing various technical bugs for Mythaura

During our Closed Beta window, the Bug Reports category will be special in that it will function as an issue tracker. Each thread can be marked as a duplicate of another and have a status & severity tied to it, allowing users to follow a bug, reply to indicate they have also encountered a bug, and see what status a specific bug has.

Bug Statuses

  • New: The default status
  • Confirmed: A programmer has been able to replicate the bug and confirm its real
  • Duplicate: This is a duplicate of an already-existing bug
  • Fixed: It’s been fixed!
  • Closed: Closed without fixing, such as if this turned out to be user error.

Severities

  • Low: Typos, minor visual glitches, asset issues, and browser-specific issues that do not impact gameplay.
  • Moderate: Functional bugs that cause inconvenience but do not break core mechanics.
  • High: Major bugs that significantly impact gameplay, progression, or player experience.
  • Critical: Urgent security vulnerabilities, game-breaking exploits, data loss, or anything that could severely affect the integrity of the game or its economy.
To encourage thorough testing and reporting, players who discover and report new bugs will receive a Shard reward once a programmer has confirmed the issue. Rewards scale based on the severity of the bug. Only the first player to report a bug is eligible for a bounty—duplicate reports will not receive rewards. Players who provide exceptionally detailed reports, including steps to replicate the bug, may receive bonus Shards at the discretion of the development team. If a bug is found to be abused before being reported, the player may not be eligible for a bounty and could face consequences.

WOLFWASPS

A group shot of all the different kinds of Wolfwasps

Wolfwasps are among the earliest and fiercest enemies you will encounter in your journeys through the Wild Areas around Talon's Rest.

Biology

The "stinger" on the end on a Wolfwasp's tail is not actually a stinger, but rather a talon. With their long and flexible tails, Wolfwasps use the hooked talon on the end to gouge at prey—including other Wolfwasps, if the situation arises.

Wolfwasps have a wide and varied diet. They are primarily carnivores, who both actively hunt as well as scavenge carcasses. When they are pressed for sources of meat, they are also known to eat fruit and insects.

The average lifespan of Wolfwasp Warriors and Drones is 2-4 years. Queens reign over their hivepacks for 10-15 years, but there are instances of particularly resilient individuals living close to 30 years. The average age of Kings is harder to determine due to the nature of their role in the Wolfwasp life cycle, but it's rare for one to live past the age of 10.

Social Structure

Wolfwasp families are called "hivepacks." These hivepacks are overseen by a Queen, who commands the Worker Drones and Warrior Drones within the ranks—all of whom are her daughters.

The Queen is the only member of the hivepack to mate, and produces all-female litters of Warrior and Worker Drones. Wolfwasp pups gestate inside of royal jelly-filled hives that line the walls of their caves. It takes approximately a month for a pup to gain the strength to eat its way out of the jelly that sealed it away. Whether or not a Wolfwasp can be a Queen is determined at birth. Future Queens receive extra attention from Workers, who dote on them like nannies.

While Warriors do not actually mate, they are able to produce unfertilized offspring, all of which are male. These are future Kings, who will be chased out of the hivepack once they reach maturity around the age of six months. They then have to defend themselves against larger, more established Kings—fearsome opponents, but sometimes their youth and energy can work to their advantage.

During mating season, the otherwise solitary Kings swarm to the site of hivepacks, initiating a bloodmatch that leaves only one male standing. This victorious King will mate with the Queen. He has to move quickly, though: Kings have evolved to have large spikes along their shoulders because once mating is complete, the Queen will turn on him and attempt to kill him. Older Kings are often scarred and disfigured by their run-ins with Queens.

Hivepacks prefer to live in already-established cave systems, but if necessary Workers will dig a system of tunnels, using layers and layers of hardened jelly to provide structure to the walls.

Cultural Significance

Architecture and art in Talon's Rest prominently feature Wolfwasps. Grotesques that sit atop Talon's Rest's stone buildings or wooden totems are often carved in their ferocious image, bearing their fangs to scare off evil spirits.

Wolfwasp byproducts are a staple in trade in the Wind's End region due to its proximity to the Waspwood, the only place on the continent where Wolfwasps are found. Wolfwasp honey is rich, smoky, and salty, with caramel notes. It is dark in color and viscous in consistency. Meads made with this honey have a rich amber hue and malty flavor.

Royal jelly, while not edible to Beasts, is a highly sought after component for several different medicines. The medical program at the University has pioneered several vaccines with this substance, and have teams of Beasts on retainer to retrieve it. It is a lucrative (if not sometimes short-lived) career path.

Corgbees

Two Corgbees, in their Radiant and non-Radiant forms. They are corgi-like in shape with bee wings

While wild Wolfwasps are almost impossible to domesticate, over the course of thousands of years Beasts bred the gentlest individuals together to create an entirely new subspecies: the Corgbee.

They've got a long history as herding dogs, and have been synonymous with farm work in Talon's Rest for as far back as anyone can remember. Their compact physique means that they have no problem weaving through the legs of the cows and sheep that graze the surrounding hills.

While a Corgbee can be happy to curl up with its owner at the end of the day, it is a pet that demands regular exercise to prevent it from becoming bored and destructive.

Despite their visual similarities, Corgbees have very little in common with their ancient ancestors anymore. Only one trait remains: they're fiercely territorial, and will protect their "pack" with their lives, if need be.

Mythaura’s latest development report is now here!

Hello hello, folks!

Content development for what we'll have available at launch is well underway, utilizing all the tools that Koa and Sark have built for us—like a dialogue creator that powers all of our questlines and a map builder that's allowing us to build 2.5D levels for your characters to explore. It's full steam ahead for our team as we continue to prepare for Closed Beta next year.

Sark has built a fishing minigame for Mythaura, which we will explore in this update. We also have the results for the Spring Quarter Ko-fi Rewards, and would like to remind everyone interested in winning some Radiant Wolfwasps for their journey through Mythaura to enter our Wolfwasp Giveaway on Instagram by 11:59 AM on May 31!

FISHING

Mythaura is filled with all manner of bodies of water—lakes, rivers, streams, and oceans. In addition to being able to traverse water by swimming, Sark has created a way for players to explore them in another dynamic way: fishing.

The fishing minigame will be available at launch, with some post-launch additions planned as well.

Mechanics

A white Dragon at the water's edge, playing the fishing minigame

After acquiring a fishing pole from the Grinning Gar, players will be able to fish along any body of water.

Players will have to keep their lure close to the fish in order to reel it in. The higher the rarity of the fish, the more difficult it will be to reel them in.

Rarer fish yield better effects when consumed and have a higher sales value with in-game vendors.

Fishing Rewards

A variety of freshwater and saltwater aquatic creatures available as fishing prizes

Fishing does not exclusively yield consumables—there's also the chance to fish up certain Companions as well!

Pictured above are just some of the creatures that you can fish up from the rivers and streams around Talon's Rest.

The Grinning Gar

The Grinning Gar, a fishing stall adorned with a large rainbow gar. It is manned by a blue and yellow Griffin. An Ottergrebe sits on the side.

"Mind your fingers around the Ottergrebe. He's insatiable."

The Grinning Gar is an adventurer's destination for all things fishing-related. Its proprietor, Captain Hawthorne, is always quick with a recommendation and quicker yet with a fantastic tale about the epic battles he has waged with the fish in Lake Lacrima.

The shop was designed by our own lovely Sourdeer and Hawthorne's design was pulled from one of the NPC Design Contest that we held. Thank you for the design submission, Satyrn! 🎣✨

Development Update - June 2025

Level Design Walkthrough Video, Ko-fi Summer Reward Concepts
A Flamebrush Boar, a green striped boar with grass on its back. The banner reads: Development Update. Beneath that: Level Design Walkthrough, Ko-fi Summer Concepts

Hi folks! It's fully summertime here in the northern hemisphere; hopefully everyone is staying safe and cool!

Level design is a hugely important part of our game development process, and Sark custom-built us a tool that allows us to make layered and complex levels in a relatively short amount of time. Level design dictates pretty much everything else that follows--objects being placed in the world, NPCs in the overworld (and, consequently, dialogue for them), boss fights, loot placement... all of this, and so much more.

This video offers a brief glimpse into some of the thought process behind why we're designing levels the way were are, and a demonstration of the design tool itself.

We hope you enjoy the video, and if you're interested in hearing about other elements of game design, please let us know and we'll see what we can do!

Level Design Walkthrough

This month, we wanted to record a video demonstrating some of the work we're doing behind the scenes to actually move the game toward a playable state. Sark built an amazing level design tool, and the video will take you on a quick tour of its features and capabilities. It'll also show off some of the amazing assets that our art team has made.

Development Update - July 2025

Elevation Rework, Dialog Technical Overview, Breeding & Glamour UI Reveal
gkYYW7c7vDKZFJCQxVBzm6pykE9nmEaZify42bwS.png
Hello everyone, hope you're doing well! July was a BIG development month for us, which we'll detail some key features of here. Most notably, Sark reworked our entire map engine--the one that we made a video of for last month's update--and it looks amazing. We are now able to fully sculpt the world instead of working on the blocky system we had before. I'm even more excited than ever for you all to be able to play in this world!

We also hit a big writing milestone: our intro quest script is complete! This allows us to move onto populating our (new and improved) Talon's Rest with NPCs and quests. This was a big one for us and a huge learning curve, and we've got a lot of learnings taken from this to apply to all our work going forward.

August is going to be another busy and productive month. Read on if you'd like an update on what we got up to during the month of July!

Elevation Rework

Originally Mythaura’s world was designed to be completely flat. A year or so ago we decided to add basic voxel elevation (cube based - similar to Minecraft) - this brought about a number of issues we had to sort out, but also a whole new dimension to our level design and world building. We could now place the player in a high up position to overlook an area they are about to embark into. We could place the player deep in a cave with descending pathways taking them deeper into the abyss. Today, we are showing off a completely reworked elevation system that takes things to the next level.

Specifically instead of using a voxel/cube based system, each tile has its own elevation, and a terrain map is generated using tessellation and normalization of vertexes to smoothly blend the landscape. This allows for full control over the terrain and enables smooth transitions between elevation without the need to manually place down ramps or rely on blocky cubes (which was or previous solution!). This upgrade is still underway and we are working on rebuilding our existing maps to utilize this tech. Check out the above screenshot for a before and after!

Game Dialog Technical Overview

LZF2sfmXyABJyMGol0p6vpVf4NGL7FSkUAd1W7vV.png
NPC, Player, and Narrator dialog is a key part of any RPG. It’s the primary way you’ll interact with characters, cutscenes, and events inside the world. It’s something we wanted to do right: with deep conditional based options that make every play-through unique and interesting.

It all starts with the Mythaura query engine - a core tenant of Mythaura’s Dialogs, Quests, Events, Bosses, and Cutscenes. It’s basically a generic if-this-then-that engine that can determine everything from: should a player see a hidden dialog option? Or can a player turn in a given quest? This allows us to adjust gameplay and the narrative based on decisions you’ve made in the past, or the time of day, or if your playing as a certain species, or if your carrying a certain item, etc. this list of possibilities is seemingly limitless with such an open-ended conditional tool!

Breeding UI

HH203g9a8QW6CgAbusf7c8TNMyIB0dTrOLna2sa0.png
Breeding beasts is a core gameplay loop of Mythaura. Finding the right match can be the difference between getting the perfect offspring combination. You can breed your own beasts, offer up your beasts for other players to pair with, or search through other player’s beasts to find the perfect match.

Breeding takes place in nurseries, you’ll have the option to unlock up to 16 separate nurseries to simultaneously breed many beasts. Each pairing can be between your own beasts or any other player’s beasts - as long as you are willing to pay the other player their going rate.

Breeding pairs can also utilize up to 4 breeding items (everything from items that adjust color outcomes, to items that adjust elements). You can preview predictions to get an idea of what the offspring might look like. When your new offspring are ready to be delivered you can watch them hatch! Maybe you’ll get twins!

Custom Glamours UI

Custom skins are one of the most unique ways to express your artistic and creative aspirations. For a small fee you’ll be able to create your own custom skins by uploading your own assets. We provide a template and all you need to do is draw within the boundaries (or it will get cropped out).

You can create and sell extra copies of your skins to re-coup costs or even make bank off your cool designs! A player driven glamour market shows off the top community contributions - maybe one of your designs will go viral! Checkout the UI mockup!

Summer 2025 Rewards Reveal, Community-Run Events
A Woolen Capragora, a fluffy white rabbit with goat horns. Beneath that: Mythaura Development Update: Wind's End Map Reveal, Introducing New Artist: Mitts, Summer 2025 Reveal, Mythaura Official Community Events

Hello folks! Another super busy month over here for Team Mythaura. This month much of our time and energy was spent developing content for Talon's Rest, the town that players will spend a majority of their time in during Chapter 1, which is the content that will be available at launch. We have the templates for all building sizes complete, which means moving on to the interior items as well as the exteriors for important locations, like the Shattered Shield Tavern and Beau's ancient underground Cipher Pedestal room.

Story things were simplified in a really major way this month as well. We're trying to build the story in such a way that it will be conducive both to players whle the content is being released as well as for full playthroughs after all the content for the continent is fully released. From the writing end, I've spent a good amount of time establishing the Followers that the player can optionally travel with. We're excited for you to be able to take them along on your journeys throughout Mythaura.

Community Events & Event Coordinators

A green bird in front of the Mythaura logo and a banner that reads Official Community Events

This month, the team was approached by two Discord community members who wanted to run a creative prompts event for the community. They had assets created and a schedule prepared, and were looking for permission to post to the Discord server. This was such a fun idea that we decided to create a new role in our Discord server: Event Coordinator, who are community members who can run formally approved Mythaura Community Events.

Are you hosting a themed art event? How about a Beast Creator design contest of your own, or a storytelling competition? Whatever it is that you're looking to run, we'd love to shine a spotlight on your efforts and highlight our creative community! We've created a badge featuring the friendly face of Pollis's pet bird, Sencha, which can be added to your posts and assets for the event.

Event Organizers will have permission to make forum posts for their events, create events in the server, and the ability to ping our new opt-in server role: @Event Participant.

If you'd like to keep up to date on Community Events, you can give yourself the Event Participant role in the #manage-roles channel in our Discord. If you'd like to run a Community Event, please read on.

Community Event Application

All Community Events will be coordinated with me, Miyazaki; please reach out to me on Discord directly. Please have at least some information about the following prepared--just enough to give a general idea, we'll hash out the details in a dedicated forum post if approved!

  • Overview of event
  • Participation rules for event
  • Any rewards that may be granted, and how they are distributed
  • Duration of event
  • Intended date(s) of event
  • Support requested of dev team
  • Where the events are intended to be posted, if in addition to Discord

Community Event Rules

We do not anticipate running into many issues with these events. Generally speaking: as long as your event is inclusive and considerate, it will be approved. But a few rules, for formality's sake:

  • The event cannot contain barriers to entry. Any and all community members must be able to participate if they choose.
  • Only formally approved Mythaura Community Events may use the Community Events badge.
  • All initial content (i.e. introductory posts, participation rules; prize overview if applicable) must be approved beforehand. Subsequent replies and event management will be the sole responsibility of the Event Coordinator(s)
  • Event Coordinators may ping the @Event Participant role to update them on the status of events.
  • No cash or Mythaura currency may be awarded to participants.
Your event must also adhere to Mythaura's community rules. The event may not:

  • harass or abuse other community members.
  • contain racist, sexist, sexually explicit or otherwise offensive content.
  • contain political and religious content.
  • contain links or have discussion around illegal content.
  • contain personal or confidential information about another community member or yourself.
  • contain spam, flood, or promote NFTs, MLMs, or other money-making programs.
  • harass members of the community for game codes or in-game items.
  • post comments to troll and cause unrest.
  • share content from sensitive topics such as self-harm, drug use, descriptions of dead or injured animals or people, etc.

Event description

"Hello y’all! While we wait for Mythaura’s beta, Maggotjuicebox and I have decided to do a creativity challenge for fun, and to help us brainstorm lore and art for our future beasts! We thought it could be a neat community event too, hence this post.

The Mythaura Musings Challenge will take place from September 1st to January 31st. Each month will have one central theme, and there will be 4-5 prompts per month (so one prompt/submission per week). Please see the following calendar (made by Mags!) for the theme prompts, with further details below.

If you would like to join, you can share your creations here, or on Tumblr with the tag #Mythaura Musings Challenge. Mags will also be awarding art badges for those who participate (see forum post for more info). Using the prompts, we hope to encourage us as a community to explore and share our personal lore plans with each other!"

FAQ

Do I need to have Mythaura's approval to host some sort of community event?

No. Players are free to make forum games and other events without any involvement from the dev team.

Mythaura Community Events are intended to give visibility to projects via our official social media channels, and to recognize players choosing to volunteer their time in order to provide something fun for the community to participate in.

Do I have to have the @Event Participant role on Discord to participate in Community Events?

No. The role is just another way for those who want to stay informed about Community Events!

What permissions do Event Coordinators have in the Discord?

Event Coordinators have the ability to post to a private Discord forum, where they can coordinate and review with the dev team. They can also create forum posts for their Community Events, and schedule server events.

Event Coordinators are allowed to ping the Event Participants role to alert them to new and upcoming Community Events.

Are Event Coordinators part of the dev team?

No. While we recognize and appreciate these community members and want to give their projects as much visibility as possible, Event Coordinators are not part of the official dev team.

What role does the dev team play in Community Events?

The dev team will review the planned content with the Event Coordinator(s) hosting the event. Once approved, the dev team will post about it in development updates and re-share (NOT re-post) it where it is posted on social media, where possible.

In the review process, the dev team will also offer case-by-case support the Event Coordinator(s) as best we can.

Wind's End Map Reveal

A map of Wind's End, a hilly farmland surrounded by forests and mountains, and an ocean to the east. It is rendered in a hand-drawn map scroll style.

Koa completed the map for the Wind's End region! The style was inspired by fantasy maps, especially those for TTRPGs--this is not a precise rendition of the map, but instead showcases the important locations of Wind's End with symbolic representations.

Below is some brief information on these key locations.

Chapter 1

Talon's Rest

The first town that the player will explore upon beginning their adventure in Mythaura, situated atop a cliff overlooking Lake Kali to the north and the rolling farmland of Wind's End to the east. Its founding marked the end of more than a century of conflict.

Waspwood Forest

A dense coniferous forest, named for the hivepacks of Wolfwasps that claim it as their territory. A proving ground for adventurers new and old.

The Arena

The forum for all organized battles, commissioned by Atticus the Reformer to provide a controlled environment in which beasts could work through their hostilities. The Arena is home to both PVE and PVP combat.

Pinereach

A violent divot marks where the mining outpost of Pinereach once stood, now reduced to a crater smoldering with ash and rubble.

Chapter 2

Tollhouse & Toll Town

The Arena attracts visitors from all across the continent, and the tollhouse collects a processing fee from each. "Toll Town" fans out from its gates, a motley market of vendor stalls, inns, and restaurants, each happy to relieve weary travelers of their troubles and their gold.

Crowcroft

Crowcroft is "the Gate of the North," and the oldest and largest settlement in Wind's End. It's the ancestral home to the historically reclusive Blackroost Drift, who preside over the town and their vinyard from atop their high hill.

The Bramblewood

A sprawling forest, spanning everything from Crowcroft in the north part to Brineberry in the south, and everything east of the Arena. It is filled with caneberry bushes, which the Blackroosts use in their fruit wines and meads.

Brineberry

A fishing village on Wind's End's southeast coast, shrouded by the Bramblewood. Due to its remote location, many of its residents make daily treks to the markets of Talon's Rest and Toll Town in order to sell their wares.

Eldrithian Ruins

Remarkably well-preserved Eldrithian ruins, maintained by the nearby town of Brineberry. The climb to the top is precarious, but the commanding view of the ocean is worth the hike.

Field of the Fallen

The site of the climactic, war-ending battle. Atticus ordered that the weapons of those who fell in battle to be left untouched, a permanent reminder of the destruction caused by the Long War. It is extremely taboo to even touch the battlefield remnants, but that doesn't deter particularly enterprising scavengers.

Development Update - September 2025 Mythaura - Browser RPG

Ko-fi Fall Concepts, Treasure Imps Overview, Intro Quest Teaser, Custom Color Contest
A rose gold imp carrying a purple sack of coins. Gold coins are spilling out of it. Beneath that: Ko-fi Fall Concepts, Treasure Imps Overview, Intro Quest Teaser, Custom Color Contest
Hello folks! We are cruising right along through 2025--hard to believe there are only three months left of the year. Where does the time even go?

Lots of writing underway for Talon's Rest and the other areas in Chapter 1, and a TON of art that's in progress--and a TON that has been completed, as well! Likewise we've had a productive month on the programming side of things as well, with Koa and Sark finishing up tasks like what happens when you faint while in a wild area, support for battle and overworld items, and functionality for Treasure Imps, which are the main subject for today's update!

Treasure Imps

A rose gold imp carrying a purple sack of coins. Gold coins are spilling out of it. To the left reads: Treasure Imp Overview

Occasionally while traveling through a Wild Area, an elite enemy may spawn in--powerful foes that have extra health and deal extra damage, but drop more valuable loot. On rare occasions, a Treasure Imp may spawn in instead.

These mischievous creatures carry satchels full of valuable loot, which it will drop upon defeat. Defeating them is no small task, though: while they may not be especially powerful, Treasure Imps are fast. They run faster than your beast is able to sprint, meaning that you'll have to use an item to increase your mobility (like a Godspeed Potion) or sneak up on it by crouching.

You'll be amply rewarded if you do catch one, though: Treasure Imps drop much better loot than your average elite enemy. With patience and preparedness, players will have a better chance at intercepting these tricky little creatures.

Treasure Imps are also companions, meaning they can potentially be tamed at the end of an encounter. They can also be radiant: the rose gold Imp featured here is our radiant version!

Intro Quest Teaser

Four abstract silhouettes, black with a white glow around them. Some appear organic, some material
Sour has been hard at work on our intro quest assets, and the amazing news: she's almost done! She's got one more asset to go, and then we're completely done with the art for first ever quest that you'll play through in Mythaura.

While we can't share the assets themselves, we wanted to share some silhouettes with you, just to give you a small taste of what you can expect at the beginning of your adventure through the world. What mysteries await you in these hypogean depths?

Mythaura's latest development progress report has been released:

Hello everyone! Another busy, exciting month for the team. It was a big transition month as we moved the art management from Koa's plate and onto Miya's, got better systems and structures in place for our artwork process, fleshed out more side areas for Chapter 1, and more.

We'll start the update with an update about our closed beta launch window.

Large divider

Closed Beta Date Update

After much discussion among the team, we have decided to postpone our closed beta to Quarter 3, 2026 instead of the previously-announced window of Quater 1, 2026.

The main reason for this change is a very important one to us: we want to avoid putting crunch on the team.

One of the key factors in this is Koa's full-time work situation. Part of the reason that we were able to project a Q1 closed beta date was based on the fact that at the end of 2024, Koa had negotiated with her employer to move from a five-day work week to a four-day work week. Unfortunately, early on in 2025, she was made to go back to a five-day week. She has maintained a Mythaura workload that is based on this four-day arrangement, which is not sustainable.

We are very excited to share the world of Mythaura with you all, but we don't want that to come at the expense of the wellbeing of our team.

Another upside of this postponement is that it will also allow our art and writing to have the time to not only pad the already-planned content for Chapter 1 to make it even more robust, but will also allow us to cut into work for Chapter 2 prior to closed beta. This way we have a bit of a headstart on Chapter 2 content and onward, and can ideally shorten the windows of time that players will need to wait between chapters.

To that end, the Ko-fi shop will stay open past the end of 2025, as previously announced, with continued rewards for those who choose to support Mythaura's development via Ko-fi.

We thank you for your understanding and will keep us posted. If you have any questions, please let us know.

Gear & Apparel UI

I think we all know that Fashion™ is a hugely important part of RPGs. Dressing Up Your Little Guys is one of life's greatest pleasures. To that end, we've created UI that will make it easy to dress your beasts exactly how you'd like.

Mythaura's wearable pieces fall into two distinct categories: Gear and Apparel. Gear confers mechanical benefits, while Apparel is purely cosmetic.

By default, any Gear that a beast is wearing will be visible--however, if you'd like your beast to gain the benefit of the gear piece but do not want it to show up in its outfit, you are able to toggle the visibility. Conversely, you can also equip Gear as cosmetic-only, which won't grant any of the Gear's benefits but will still show up in your beast's outfit.

Battle Scars Apparel

Four adult Griffins, covered in deep battle scars

Sashie has made us one of our first full sets of apparel--our Battle Scars, which come in four varieties (pictured from left to right in the picture above):

  • Vicious Battle Scars
  • Atomic Battle Scars
  • Brutal Battle Scars
  • Savage Battle Scars
These will be acquired through play in the Arena. Each set has 4-5 pieces; beasts who don't have tails that can be scarred (like Unicorns and Hippogriffs) will not have a tail piece, and will instead have more scarring added to the hind scar piece.

These have been translated across all adult bases. Check out a few of the other battle-hardened beasts below!

Writing & Design Updates

Most of Miya's work during October was regarding the handoff of art team management, and as a result was focused much more around restructuring the file organization and conventions, itemizing and assigning new art tasks, and preparing the art team for a month of working on the Waspwood Forest area next month.

  • Intro quest has been restructured and the rewrite is underway

  • Wolfwasp Hunter NPC character + services established
  • Feldira (Rogue follower) personal quest first step outlined

So, we've arrived at the end of 2025... what a year! Our team has grown, our workflow has tightened, and we've got our eyes set on a new release date that will allow us to make better content at a sustainable pace.

Thank you all so much for sticking with us throughout the course of our development here. We'll break down a new artwork workflow that we've established and will be applying to our work from here on out. We've also got our Fall 2025 Ko-fi rewards, our Custom Color Contest winner, and more!

Improved Artwork Process / #Waspvember

A Wolfwasp Queen and King facing one another. Between them, text reads: #Waspvember

Saying that our art team is the lifeblood of our project would be an understatement. For over three years, they have been hard at work producing assets that make Mythaura a place where players can spend hours upon hours adventuring within.

During the month of November, the team experimented with a new workflow: instead of each team member working on their own siloed tasks, the entire art team worked on assets for the Waspwood Forest, the Wild Area that will be available for exploration at launch. #Wapsvember was a great opportunity for the team to shape the look and tone of the area, which they definitely did: the Waspwood is a much richer, more detailed place because of their hard work.

Our weekly team meetings revolved around #Waspvember. In real time, we got to see the Waspwood evolving in directions that went beyond the contents of the initial design brief. Each artist's work served as a way to tighten up the look and feel of the world, honing in on the atmosphere with each asset created. The team really came together to make something we're proud to share with you when Mythaura launches.

While there will inevitably be assets that don't slot neatly into one overarching project like the Waspwood, we plan to make this unified workflow our standard operating procedure, not the exception. We're excited to spend the second half of December and the month of January on filling out Talon's Rest!

Waspwood Forest Teasers

Three silhouetted items

Sour and Mitts are a stellar duo, and are our dedicated overworld asset team. Above we've got a small sampling of some of the assets that they worked on for the Huntsman's Cabin, buried deep within the Waspwood. This Griffin is a lifelong Wolfwasp hunter and talented craftsman, and is willing to render services to any Beast with the fortitude to make the treacherous journey to his cabin.

New Apparel: Cat Whiskers

An adult Hippogriff, Griffin, and Quetzal. They each have long cat whikers on their eyebrows and cheeks

One of the apparel pieces that Sashie was working on were these adorable Cat Whiskers, which are currently available for all adult Beasts.

The Hippogriff, Griffin, and Quetzal were all determined by Sashie, but when the team voted between two options for each the other six species, the results were almost perfectly split. That's when we decided to outsource the decision to our supporters, who helped us decide on the winners, pictured below!
