Neopets deletes old neomails without warning users

According to a post on Neopets’ subbredit, a lot of users’ neomails were recently deleted from Neopets’ database and users weren’t notified that that they were going to be losing their neomails.

So, if you’re missing any Neomails from the past 90 days, this is why.

Neomails deleted

Tnt runs many daily scripts. One of those was in charge of deleting neomails. Neomails have both an unique id (incremental) and a timestamp of time sent. The script was supposed to erase old neomails, but for some reason they filter the messages by a unique id range. So over time, more messages would be sent and the ids would increase over the range limit so the script would stop erasing. Someone was probably supposed to update that id range but it never was, until recently.

I don't have a saved copy of the old script so not sure if they changed anything other than the message id range. But now, any neomail in current new id range that has not been marked as do not delete by staff + (are older than 90 days or (are older than 30 days and are in inbox folder)) will get deleted. Yesterday the script deleted 15.8 million neomails. A few days ago it deleted 3.3m

I don't see anything wrong with clearing out old messages. Messages that old wouldn't be checked anyways.

Even if old messages, they should still give some kind of warning. I'm sure there are some who may have wanted their old messages yet.

I feel strongly that Neopets should find a different approach to deleting Neomails. Users should not have to tolerate the elimination of their memories and discussions. The loss regarding essential Neomails has made me truly disappointed.

This would have been the best approach. There might be conversations that people were holding on to because it came from a person who's no longer alive, and the person may have some attachment to them. If they were given warning, they could have backed up the messages before they were deleted.

They are very mad for not at least giving an update such was in plans. If anyone have any need to go over their older messages, they should do so before they wipe it off.

Exactly. They could have sent out a notification to the users so they could back up their mail and not lose them all. A lot of them had attachments to their mails and lost a lot of sentimental neomails, which isn’t a good thing. A prior warning would have been

That is true. It is wrong that they did what they did because there are people who would still find those old messages to be useful, and such act by Neopets ain't good at all.

This. Clearing out messages that were full of memories were important to a lot of users. At least, giving them a prior notice so that they could have saved them to their phones or computers would have been a lot better.

You never know what your users are saving for good times, or memories without directly alerting them or giving them a heads up.

It's like someone axing your social media account, or group that was inactive as the platform owner thought you weren't using it anymore as you were inactive for quite sometime. Then, you try to log in a few weeks later and your entire account is gone. Then, you're forced to make a new account and start over.

It's also like your email account, you won't see things randomly deleted, as you're the one responsible for deleting and handling your emails.

I understand how frustrating it could be for users and I think Neopet should be more reasonable next time. Deleting neomails without informing users is quite frustrating, especially those who have vital things in there.
