OpenAI has expanded ChatGPT’s capabilities with an integrated real-time search engine, enhancing its ability to deliver accurate responses on sports, news, weather, and other timely topics.
With this update, OpenAI directly challenges Google’s core business and also overlaps with its partner Microsoft’s Bing, positioning ChatGPT as a more comprehensive tool that’s both informative and up-to-the-minute.
The search feature is now embedded within ChatGPT.com and is accessible through the ChatGPT mobile and desktop apps. Paid ChatGPT Plus and Team users can start using the feature today, with rollout to paid enterprise and educational users in the coming weeks and free users in the future. The search tool is easily accessed through a globe icon, allowing users to initiate real-time queries directly. Additionally, ChatGPT will automatically route certain queries through the search engine if it determines that live data could enhance the response. Users will see responses in the familiar ChatGPT format but may notice new additions, such as maps, stock charts, and images that reflect real-time updates.
OpenAI has chosen not to monetize its search results with ads and has stated it has no immediate plans to do so, despite the potential profitability of search advertising, especially in sectors like travel and healthcare.
OpenAI’s search partnerships include Microsoft and a selection of publishers like Axel Springer, Vox Media, and The Associated Press. These partnerships allow OpenAI to deliver news from verified sources while respecting publishers who prefer not to have their content included.
In July, OpenAI began testing SearchGPT as a standalone feature, with plans to incorporate it into ChatGPT if successful. Today’s release marks the evolution of that concept, offering users a blend of AI-driven insights and real-time information.
