This article has been written by MobileGamer and contains a report regarding Outfit 7, the company behind My Talking Tom.

The mobile game business is full of companies whose work is played by many millions of people worldwide, yet they are rarely ever written about.

Outfit7 might be one of the biggest. Since its first breakout hit with Talking Tom – which took off ten years ago thanks to its fun use of the iPhone’s mic – the Slovenian firm has expanded the series to more than 20 games which have generated over 23 billion downloads to date, says Jernej Česen, Outfit7’s senior VP of distribution and business intelligence.

We always ask for numbers when putting together articles like this, and Česen was only too happy to oblige: he claims that the Talking Tom & Friends IP was the top games franchise by downloads for 10 consecutive years, from 2013-2022.

Appmagic data says My Talking Angela is the firm’s top earner by lifetime IAP – but much of Outfit7’s income comes from ads.
He adds that the firm’s over 20 games have collectively surpassed 23bn downloads, and that Outfit7 serves 470m monthly players. 70% of those people are playing its range of virtual pet games, while another 20% is occupied with runner games and the final 10% a mixture of the other spin-offs. Česen describes a well-distributed user base in terms of both geography and demographic, and says that over 50% of players arrive at their games organically.

Outfit7’s slightly puzzling acquisition by chemicals giant Zhejiang Jinke in 2017 now makes sense as a play for the Chinese market. “Since acquisition, we’ve had the freedom to develop and expand the Talking Tom & Friends IP,” says Česen, who says that on top of its games, Outfit7 licenses over 25 themed Talking Tom & Friends parks across China.

Outfit7 claims to have over
65% of the virtual pet game market sewn up, but Česen says “we’re not resting on our laurels” – its latest launch, My Talking Hank: Islands, has already passed 10m downloads within its first week and achieved Top 10 rankings on Google Play in over 30 countries.

Česen says that regular updates to its Talking Tom games has been foundational to the company’s success, but it has also dabbled with other IP. It launched strategy RPG Mythic Legends in 2021 through its Outfit7 Neo label, though the game does not appear to have made much impact.

Outside of games, Česen continues to reel off big numbers: the Talking Tom & Friends IP has a combined total of over 106m YouTube subscribers, and a film is still coming, apparently, though little has been seen or heard from the project since it was first announced ten years ago.
