Is it a good idea or not? People who are against it say it only causes layoffs. Those for it say it's a good idea because the companies can afford it, but they don't want to do it.

I am all for it because I don't know how anyone can live on minimum wage. Matter of fact every company around me that is hiring pays more than minimum wage.

Ugh, it is a touchy issue as even if you raise it, then stores need to raise prices to match it, creating a bad loop. But yes, it either needs to increase or things need to become cheaper to live, you can't increase prices and not be able to afford it.

I think the idea is terrible, but that doesn't mean I'm anti-poor or anything. I mean, myself my income isn't so hot, but, nonetheless, all I see in California, for instance, is decreased business and layoffs. It's just a fact because that model doesn't work in regard to fast food.

I am on disability and the price of everything is just insane. My buying power is less and less every time I go to the grocery store which is why I visit food banks. Because I would probably starve if we didn't go to food banks.

I don't know the price of an apartment where you guys live, but it's $1,100 a month for a 1 bedroom in the area that I live in and you are not going to be able to afford an apartment on a minimum-wage job.

P.S. If you want a nice 1 bedroom you're talking $1,800+ a month.

I hardly deviate much from my grocery bill, watching it go from 40 to 80 dollars on a weekly trip is deadly X_X

and apartments in my area used to be 500-700 bucks and now it's 800+ for anything decent.

It definitely sucks for sure, do you have any food banks you could go to in your area? The ones around here have good stuff that you can get and it's free.

What's the inflation levels? Does it affect the people's purchasing power? Do you think people can cope with what they are being paid with the inflation now if their wage isn't increased?

Well, on one hand, people can't cope with low wages, but on the other hand, raising wages simply leads to job loss. I mean, you can't deal with inflation (way lower purchasing power) with no job at all.

What's the inflation levels?

In the US, UK etc., the levels are terrible. Rent and food is thru the roof.

It can't be argued that without raising the minimum wage, it's going to be almost impossible for people to survival literally.

The problem is that raising the minimum wage without raising something to balance it will cause layoffs, shut-downs, and reduced hours/reduced benefits. It is the food industry that will suffer the most. The owner must (in US) pay equal amounts of Social Security tax for each employee, calculate the wage for each employee, calculate the benefits for each employee and then calculate the total paid out plus the building cost (rent, utilities, advertising, insurance). If the amount to be paid out is more than the profit then cuts will be made or the business closed. There is a point where people draw the line of paying more than a certain amount for fast food.

In my opinion, the government should have been slowly increasing the minimum wage over the past 20 years. They've failed the people! I don't know why it's been such a struggle for them to realize that the poor need to have some sort of raise to get by, but maybe that's the problem, the politicians are out of touch.

With the rising cost of living and many struggling to even be able to put a meal on the table, I do believe that a pay rise is needed. The fact it is taking so many governments as long as it is to consider this or even do it is shocking.

Some people consider fast food jobs as something for teenagers or people just starting out. They don't see it as a career choice and think if it was a career choice it would be harsh on the economy because consumers simply can't pay for food in the amount that would pay career employees.

Anyway, on the other side, some liberals believe that CEOs refuse pay cuts, so they say the money is there, except in the case of small businesses, but it's being horded.

They are definitely in touch and understand exactly and everything that's happening so far but the sad reality is that they don't care about that aspect of the society's problem. If it's to support their war, there will be enough money to do it.

That is the strange thing that I don't understand about government. I mean, when you look at the way that they neglect people, you will be shocked if those government officials have conscience at all.

Whenever I tell people how much I make on my disability they are shocked and say "I don't know how you do it". But the simple fact is I have no choice but to do it. If government officials had to live on what I live on then I am sure people would get a lot more money.

Richer people moving in drives up land prices. That's what's happening in Appalachia (in the USA) and Puerto Rico. Thoughts?

They only have conscience for what affects them but not others. It's why they look out for only themselves and careless about what's happening to others.

I think the same can be said for a lot of people. I know someone who makes $10k a week and doesn't have a worry in the world. And then there are people like me who have to go to food banks just to survive.

I am not saying everything should be equal, I just wish politicians could see the light and help the people who are hurting the worst.

Raising the minimum wage is a good idea but some company couldn't do it because it can improve standard of living, increase productivity too. Some people are against raising the minimum wage because they thought it will lead to job losses and layoffs.

Money isn't everything. Bottom line, people need a decent price for the lowest cost food and housing, but everyone doesn't need luxury vacations or top-of-the-line clothes.

No sir.. MONEY IS EVERYTHING!

I can't think of anything that is better than money apart from having good health.

I support the increase of the minimum wage. It is impossible to earn low salaries in this period where the prices of things are going up. I have observed that companies that pays its employees higher are more successful.

A higher minimum wage has crushed fast food in California, for instance. But then again, state leaders can't lower the cost of living, which is the highest in the US.

If you find yourself in my country, you wouldn't say anything about US having a high cost of living. It's worst in Nigeria!!

It's good to raise the minimum wage, I don't think there will be layoffs as others are thinking. Some people are already suffering with the low wages. Everything is going higher every day but still salary earners are still on the same amount for a long time.
