Skype is officially done as of today.

It is wild to think about, considering it used to run the entire voice/video game. It was the go-to before Zoom ever existed. Before Slack threads. Before Teams tried to be everything at once.

Skype had it all at one point:
300M+ active users
A name just as powerful as Google in the communication space
First to the table with global remote calling

But it got comfortable. Too comfortable.

While others were adapting to mobile-first, building for teams, scaling fast, Skype was stuck playing it safe. And in this industry, playing it safe is usually how you lose.

The meme going around hits hard because it’s real, Skype walked so Zoom, Discord, and everyone else could run laps around it.

Skype didn’t get beat because it had a weak brand, it got beat because it stopped pushing.

This should hit home for anyone running a tech platform, a service, even a pet site. If you’re not shipping updates, listening to users, or growing with the times… you’re already behind.

Don’t be Skype. Keep on working and striving & moving forward.

What are some of your favorite memories from Skype? Do you remember the first time that you used Skype?

I stopped using Skype a long time ago. I'm surprised it shut down though. I thought many still used Skype.
Microsoft decided to close it down, so they can move everyone over to Microsoft teams if they choose to do so.

However, a lot of users are more than likely using Zoom or Discord now.

I am confused now because I can still run skype and I had a video call yesterday. Now I can select user I want to talk with and there is video button still showing. I may even try if it works today. I am unsure what they mean by shutdown. I used this app to teach some online students but I am moving to discord now even I am unhappy with it because there are limits to the files being shared.

Well, I used to... Make use of it a lot... Back in the day.
However, I haven't used it for over an year now. So, I don't really care one way or the other -.-"

I think the shutdown of Skype wouldn't affect manu people because there is an alternative. This means it might not be a significant loss for everyone especially with Microsoft Teams Free that is offering similar features.

I wonder if it'll still work if you still have the app downloaded on your computer, but there won't be any further updates. It may take some time for them to fully shut it down for everyone running the software.

It's been years since I last used Skype, but I'll miss it. I used to use it all the time after I stopped using MSN messenger and AIM messenger.

Exactly! However I never used teams for personal calls (0v0)
I always use either WhatsApp or Viber for that.

Possible they are shutting it down in stages, but most likely it will be done by end of the year.

The first time I make use of Skype was when I was on video call with my childhood friend. She left to another state to continue her education. Our promise is that we will keep in contact and we did till we finished high school.

There are so many alternatives to Skype available and that is why it might not be missed to some extent. I use WhatsApp in some cases and it does most of the functions of Skype.
Exactly ....however lately I tend to learn towards Viber.
Probably in the future I would want to use something... That's known for it's transparency.

It's not something to panic about because there are many alternatives. You can use WhatsApp, Microsoft Team and others that can still function like Skype.

I was still using Skype daily, so I was sad to see it go. It had been going for a long time, but I can understand why Microsoft are pushing Teams.

I now use Discord since Skype closed.

Yes, there is absolutely nothing to panic about because the transition to Microsoft Teams seems smooth and it's very easy for users to migrate their data and contacts.
Not everybody are interested with Microsoft Teams even when it gives the advantages like Skype. Everything being equal is that you can enjoy the ones you prefer and nobody is going to force you to it.

As I have mentioned before, so many people might prefer other platforms because they are more sophisticated. So many apps are springing up nowadays and they offer better features compared to Skype.

Skype made video calls possible. With that level of innovation at the time, we would have expected Skype to consolidate and stamp it's foothold on the niche. It had everything to be the market leader of that niche. But it slept and newer brands came to overtake it. We enjoyed it while it lasted.

If it's about apps that can offer better features and newer technology, they are everywhere.
I think people don't find it easy to leave Skype which they started with for a long time.

What are your thoughts on Microsoft teams? I haven't used it. I'm not so familiar with. I was a heavy Skype user in the past though along with Msn messenger.

Discord is cool as well, but if Microsoft teams offers something that Discord doesn't, I wouldn't mind using it.

I used Skype in the past to talk to my childhood friend. I also used it to communicate with staff on Forum Promotion when I was part of the Review Team when it existed and to communicate with my co admin on Mighty No. 9 Universe. I didn't think people were still using it. :V
