Real-time strategy games once dominated PC gaming, but now, only a few like Age of Empires and Company of Heroes are still playable. Have modern gaming habits, esports trends, or mobile dominance shifted players away from RTS? What would it take for this genre to thrive again?

The main reason behind RTS game disappearance was from the changes in gaming market toward casual gameplay formats. Modern video game players seek quick matches that deliver instant rewards that traditionally RTS games do not provide.

RTS games have faced difficulties in responding to the changing gaming patterns and popular game industry trends. Competitive video gaming trends have shifted the industry toward a more competitive game experiences.

Learning to play RTS games is a very deep curve. And modern gamers are really not comfortable with that. The current generation of young gamers don't really have the patience to stay and learn a game. They prefer games that they can pick and play. Nevertheless, RTS games that are good are still getting the numbers on terms of sales despite not really being mainstream.

RTS games are very technical, they demand constant multitasking, fast decision-making, and high mechanical skill, and these things can overwhelm players.

Maybe because they have a steep learning curve and require significant time to master. Many players prefer genres that are easier to pick up and play.

Another factor is that of understanding how to play those real-time strategy games. It is a game genre that would demand one to learn more about a game before they can be able to enjoy it. Sadly, most players nowadays don't have that time for it.
