I believe it depends on the creators of said virtual pets. You have some that are fantasy based, and some that are more realistic based.

Those that are fantasy based tend to be more unique than others. Fantasy based have their own unique traits, and descriptions, where realistic pets tend to favor more realistic environments.

Each artist, designer, and owner tends to bring forth their own ideas & concepts to their own virtual world environments. I can't say say what's generic, and what's not generic to one. It may feel that way to you, but it may not feel generic to another.
