Midnight Society, the game development studio co-founded by Guy ‘Dr Disrespect’ Beahm and Robert ‘fourzerotwo’ Bowling, has officially announced its permanent closure.
The studio had been developing Deadrop, a free-to-play first-person vertical extraction shooter set in the 1980s, and had previously sold Founders Access Passes to grant early access ahead of its global launch.
“Today, we are announcing that Midnight Society will be closing its doors after three incredible years, with an amazing team of over 55 developers contributing to our new IP, Deadrop,” the studio shared in an official statement on X on January 30.
The company reportedly underwent layoffs in September 2024, following its decision to cut ties with Dr Disrespect after allegations surfaced regarding inappropriate messages sent to a minor.
While the streamer initially acknowledged the situation in a now-deleted tweet in June 2024, he later denied any wrongdoing. In response to the controversy, YouTube demonetized Dr Disrespect’s channel—however, on the same day as Midnight Society’s shutdown, his channel was re-enabled for ad revenue.
With Midnight Society shutting down, all employees are now looking for new opportunities. The studio has encouraged other game companies to consider hiring its developers.
“We are actively seeking other game studios interested in offering employment opportunities to our talented team members,” the studio stated.
“If you know anyone hiring, please share this message with them or DM us for direct introductions. We sincerely thank our community and deeply regret that we couldn’t achieve our ultimate goal.”
At this time, Midnight Society has not confirmed whether refunds will be provided to players who purchased Founders Access Passes.
Midnight Society’s closure is part of a larger trend of shutdowns in the gaming industry. Ubisoft recently announced the closure of its Leamington studio in the UK, which contributed to major titles like Far Cry 5 and Tom Clancy’s The Division.
