Four years ago, Reddit user Sarcatastrophe posted in r/tipofmytongue about an early 2000s girls electronic toy they could not remember the name of. Sadly, no one was able to identify this toy. September 2021, user Naturally_Obsessed88 posted about the exact same toys and not remembering what they were called or being able to locate them. Having searched Google, eBay, Etsy, Pinterest as well as posting on other subreddits and forums, no one has heard of this toy and nothing even close can be found.

Here are the details:
  • Late 90s/early 2000s, more like around 2000
  • Sold in USA
  • Virtual “best friend” - marketed towards girls
  • Boxy and clunky, approx. credit card sized about 2” tall with keychain clip
  • Each device was themed around one of three characters; arty, preppy and another (unknown):
    • The Arty case was purple, green and blue
    • The Preppy case was pink, yellow and blue
  • Open device to reveal LCD, pixel screen and D-pad in the top of the device
  • Bottom of the device swiveled open, contained small items associated with character:
    • Arty character had pencil, paper and Spirograph
    • Preppy character had make-up (possibly lipgloss and a mirror)
  • You could interact with the friend, go shopping and buy items for them that they might like, read their updates, answer their questions
  • Device would make noise - Kerr-Ching when a good purchase was made, notification if they had something to tell you
  • Has been confirmed NOT to be:
    • Pixel Chix
    • Bandai Girlz Connect
It’s crazy that nothing about this item can be found but two people had clear memories of it existing. Plenty of similar items have been found but not these exact toys which would have existed in the early days of the web.

Any help to solve this mystery of an unknown toy would be incredibly appreciated.

Nothing comes to mind for this toy, but it almost sounds like some kind of wannabe Polly Pocket meets Tamogotchi?
I recently went through my family's storage unit, and cleaned out a huge collection of old 90's/2000's toys from fast food children's meals. There were a ton of toys that were clear ripoffs of whatever movie or cartoon or fad was popular at the time. I almost wonder if this was an obscure fast food toy trying to bank on the popularity of Tamogotchi or something similar. I know databases of Burger King and McDonald's meal toys exist, I'm not sure about other less popular chains, but that would be my suggestion to try looking into!

I haven't read any of these posts on Reddit, so sorry if I'm just repeating what's already been said.
