If my memory serves me right, it should be in 2000's that I started playing pet site games. Neopets is the oldest site I've used which is very good. I had fun on Pet Society but it was very unfortunate EA acquired the licensing rights to the game and shut it down in 2013.

It’s always disappointing when a new company or individual buys a virtual pet site and shuts it down. I’ll never understand the point of buying a project and closing it. It has happened a lot in this industry.

Neopets has changed owners so many times and they’re still thriving to this day. They’ve went through 4-5 different ownership changes.
There’s a new pet society project that launched in 2019, Pet Pals City. It’s not as big as the original though.

I never seem to understand the reason why they do that. Could it be to scorn those who are playing on the site before their acquisition of it.

I’m not entirely sure. I think some of them buy it and then find out that the coding behind the game is bad & they don’t have the expertise nor time to fully rewrite the code. There’s also some people that buy them to take competition off the market.

Especially if they own similar games. It’s never a good thing when a site is bought out and then soon after, they close. It’s a sad reality and it has happened a lot over the years smh.

I believe that this could be a very good reason why they do it most of the time because when they don't have any plan on working on the project but simply just to eliminate the competition in the market, it's sounds as a perfect game plan.

This might be the case of what's happening with such games. It's sad this have become the reality of such pet site games when they end up being sold.

I will always blame the inventor of an pet site game that ends up being sold at one point because they never really planned well on how to improve on the longevity of the game.

I wouldn't be too harsh on them because I think that no one would want to start a project of a pet site game they don't want to see through being successful.

There’s been a few that have managed to do well after being sold, especially Mweor.

FelisFire is also another pet site that is doing better after being sold. Chibipaws is no longer around after being sold as is Lurapets though.

Novilar fell by the wayside as well after being sold. The same thing happened with Venetopia too. I believe a lot of the owners that purchased most of these pet sites thought it would be easy to run these games, but then they didn’t have the time nor drive to keep them running. I’ll never understand the point of wasting your money and then leaving a project to die though.

I had been playing virtual pet games since 2008, though it was on console. I just started playing on Virtual Pet sites in 2012. Neopets was the first virtual pet site I signed up on. And the account has been in existence from that time till now.
