Skype is officially done as of today.

It is wild to think about, considering it used to run the entire voice/video game. It was the go-to before Zoom ever existed. Before Slack threads. Before Teams tried to be everything at once.

Skype had it all at one point:
300M+ active users
A name just as powerful as Google in the communication space
First to the table with global remote calling

But it got comfortable. Too comfortable.

While others were adapting to mobile-first, building for teams, scaling fast, Skype was stuck playing it safe. And in this industry, playing it safe is usually how you lose.

The meme going around hits hard because it’s real, Skype walked so Zoom, Discord, and everyone else could run laps around it.

Skype didn’t get beat because it had a weak brand, it got beat because it stopped pushing.

This should hit home for anyone running a tech platform, a service, even a pet site. If you’re not shipping updates, listening to users, or growing with the times… you’re already behind.

Don’t be Skype. Keep on working and striving & moving forward.

What are some of your favorite memories from Skype? Do you remember the first time that you used Skype?

I stopped using Skype a long time ago. I'm surprised it shut down though. I thought many still used Skype.
Microsoft decided to close it down, so they can move everyone over to Microsoft teams if they choose to do so.

However, a lot of users are more than likely using Zoom or Discord now.

I am confused now because I can still run skype and I had a video call yesterday. Now I can select user I want to talk with and there is video button still showing. I may even try if it works today. I am unsure what they mean by shutdown. I used this app to teach some online students but I am moving to discord now even I am unhappy with it because there are limits to the files being shared.

Well, I used to... Make use of it a lot... Back in the day.
However, I haven't used it for over an year now. So, I don't really care one way or the other -.-"

I think the shutdown of Skype wouldn't affect manu people because there is an alternative. This means it might not be a significant loss for everyone especially with Microsoft Teams Free that is offering similar features.

I wonder if it'll still work if you still have the app downloaded on your computer, but there won't be any further updates. It may take some time for them to fully shut it down for everyone running the software.

It's been years since I last used Skype, but I'll miss it. I used to use it all the time after I stopped using MSN messenger and AIM messenger.
