Marapets and Subeta are two virtual pet sites that are really pushing to unseat Neopets on the number 1 spot. Subeta has got a unique art style for their pets that makes a lot of fans want to come around and play, and that is one of their selling points. Marapets, on the other hands now have over a million registered users, which is a sign that a lot of players are coming on boards because of what they have to offer.

Marapets have been one of the best virtual pet games that gave Neopets a good competition. Without what Marapets did, Neopets wouldn't sit up and improve.

Exactly. Never take fans for granted. Once you overlook them in giving them what they truly deserve, they will look for a better alternative.
That's a great point. Lack of activity or content update is one of the biggest threats any game has, Neopets inclusive. If a new virtual pet game could offer the same experience but with something new and interesting and more importantly, could pay attention to it’s users, then yes, there may be a chance to lure people away from Neopets.

Right now, it's going to be very difficult to lure Neopets lovers away permanently because the new owners have made sure to add more upgrades and creative features to the game.

That's a valid point. Neopets consistently has its patrons and I heard that the the new executives are prudent in redesigning the game. But I believe that similar game like Marapets or Subeta is quite likely to overthrow Neopets.

With the rise of new merchandise and with Neopets focusing on their mobile apps, it’ll be pretty tough for any new game to attract their user base. They’re working hard to attract more fans by any means possible.

According to SimilarWeb, Neopets is currently receiving about 7.8 monthly visits a month where Marapets is receiving about 1.1 million monthly visits.

Flight Rising is currently receiving about 3.6 million monthly visits a month, so they’re starting to gain some traction on Neopets.

Marapets was smart as well, especially since they launched various advertising campaigns in their first couple of years to attract a couple of million users. However, they haven’t done so in a while. If they decided to do it again, they’d be able to grow a lot faster again. There was a point in time where they averaged about 3,000 players online at any given moment.

Just we have been discussing, with all the things going on with Neopets as of late, it gives other pet site games a chance to chase and catch up with Neopets because Neopets have been getting a lot of things wrong as of late.

It really does. If neopets doesn't start implementing new features soon or focus on quality of life updates, their users will eventually start moving to other games.

Their news page has been flooded with NC mall updates lately, which isn't a good thing. They've been heavily invested in new merchandised and paid features, which is started to be a major turn off to all of their players.

A lot of core site features haven't been updated either and their main focus is making money in an economy that isn't doing too well. It's like Dominic Law(their ceo) wants to milk the user base for all its worth, so he can eventually sell it like their previous owners did.

Neopets also received an investment of $4 million when Dominic Law took the game over from Jumpstart and Netdragon, so it's kind of weird how they're pushing out so updates like that.

If neopets launched some new games and features & fixed a lot of broken features, their user base would be relatively happy. They only have 40k monthly active users as well, so in order to drive in new users, they'll need to add some new things.

Seriously, I can't understand the reason why they have been on back to back run of doing things wrong with the game. It's not like they are not witnessing how it's badly affecting the game but they are not doing anything to fix it in a haste.

Neopets definitely dominated the virtual pet world for years! I think for a game to beat it today, it would need amazing mobile integration, social features that connect real friends, and constant fresh content without paywalls. Maybe something combining AR technology like Pokémon GO with the caring aspects of Neopets could finally take the crown.

Combining AR technology would shift the entire culture and wouldn’t even be the same game. AR games and traditional pet games aren’t in the same realms.

I don’t see these two types of tech working side by side in one game. It would take a developer way too much work to combine them, and the end result wouldn’t hit right for either audience.

What type of social features do you think would work? I believe the only thing that would possibly work is a more modern approach with messaging and forums, where users can actually share forum posts to social media. That alone could help the site grow. Right now, you still have to copy and paste the forum link to share it, which just feels outdated.

The main thing is that Neopets is loaded with games and features. But a pet site that focuses on the fundamentals that made Neopets great in the first place could take its crown, especially if it creates a better atmosphere overall.

There are a lot of things Neopets offers that other pet sites don’t, and that’s something any new project would need to address if it’s trying to take the crown. Especially when it comes to merchandise, advertising, and all of that.

If you don’t want to focus on merch, then advertising could work wonders, as long as you focus on the gameplay first and have a quality game that’s actually playable and fun, like Neopets.

For example, Neopets puts out a lot of press releases whenever they introduce something new or want to highlight their “statistics.” That’s something other pet sites could lean on as well. It keeps Neopets in the media cycle and gives them free publicity every time they do it.
